Do you guys like eastern influenced stuff?

Got a bit of an idea running at the moment.....using a different tuning. Melody uses the 5th mode of harmonic minor (but i cant remember the name of it...someone remind me) to give that middle eastern sound.

I'm not sure what to make of it...is it a bit cheesy/corny/a cash in on 'that sound' - or do ya like it? Keeping in mind that its hopefully the beginning of an evolving idea....

Please recommend to me any similar examples of this style of music.

I would find some "real" middle eastern stuff and listen to it! Not mid-east pop! The real cultural/ethnic stuff! I once saw this muslim cat jamming on a flute thingy (more like a recorder). I really don't know the proper name for the instrument. But he was sitting all alone. Just jammin by himself! Dude! He rocked!

Re: Do you guys like eastern influenced stuff?

So where am i finding this middle eastern stuff?....it sure aint anywhere in aus

Re: Do you guys like eastern influenced stuff?

Man it's hard to find that stuff I know! I remember in the 70's it was a fad for cats to travel to India and study with the Gurus. They all came back playin sitars! However, very few people have done the same sorts of exploration in the middle east.

As someone who lives in the middle easr I have to listen too much to these stuff... it's not my favorite style (calling it a style is not right because it is really diverse).

You're thing didn't really sound middle eatern by the way... sounded more like Pete Townsound experimenting on a The who album... which is a good thing... I liked it (weird way to throw in a compliment).

And Osensei- to strap on a suicide vest?? get a life man...

Ok, I'll retract my statement! Sorry, for the cultural insensitivity!

Thats very good. Its good to see someone who understands some theory. It almost sounds zeppelinesque. You might have a hit on your hands.

I have been toying with the idea on buying a cheapo tele and getting one of those gotoh sitar conversion bridges and going with a fretless neck. Trying to get a sound like a sarod.

Re: Do you guys like eastern influenced stuff?

You might wanna look into some Alice Coltrane or Pharoah Sanders! Not really middle eastern though! More Hindu! But the Indian influenced artist quite frequently use great Muslim artists. Although they mostly play percussion you do eventually find some that play the violin in the Ragas.

Also John McLaughlin and Shakti might be cool! Still not middle eastern though!

Re: Do you guys like eastern influenced stuff?

Check out the Karl Sanders solo album. He has a lot of middle eastern guitar on that album and it isn't anything like the vile crap he does with Isis.

Re: Do you guys like eastern influenced stuff?

Actually scalloping is something more common the fretless necks on middle eastern music guitar- idsnowdog.

Here's something for you Larry:
Techniques:
Sliding works great... chromatic runs... open strings- try playing the E minor scale while using the lower string of wherever you play open (think Led Zep 4 sticks).

Good middle eastern guitarist you can easily find on Soul seek or emule- Ehud Banai. He's an Israeli with a pretty ecletic ethnic guitar style- doesn't have the greatest chops but the whole arab and mediterenian thing is in there(and I don't remmember the name of his songs with the famous solos- oh well... it's in hebrew anyway... it won't help you).

Again, not my cup of tea of music but due to my geographic location I did pick up a few things.

Re: Do you guys like eastern influenced stuff?

The sarod is an Indian instrument that is a scaled down sitar with an unfretted metal fretboard.

Most middle eastern instruments tend to have "tie" frets rather than metallic frets. The tie frets are just nylon or gut ties. The idea being that the ties can be repositioned to play microtonal melody.

isno- I'm talking about guitars.
but yeah- for instruments like Ud you're right.

Re: Do you guys like eastern influenced stuff?

jazzerlbn, i know what ya mean man. My stuff probably sounds weak to a local or the area. But i've never listened to the stuff before.

Listened to ehud banai.....pretty good stuff, he has a good tone. But i thought it was pretty 'poppy'...didnt sound very traditional

Well duh... it's about as much eastern influence I can take in a song... there are stuff preformers which are heavier in their influence... more traditional... I don't know them enough... if I'll stumble into something in the near future- I'll let you know. :reporter:
