Do you have a designated guitar for a specific tuning?

I'm a typical E Standard player, but I like bands who use lower tunings and I like trying to write in lower tunings as well. I recently bought a used Ibanez Art that will be my designated low-tuning guitar, strung with 12's. I've never been a fan of changing the tuning of your strings past Drop D and Eb Standard for numerous reasons. First, going from E, down to C for one or 2 songs, and back up to E definitely weakens the strings at the bridge end, and often causes them to break soon afterwards. Second, I believe it throws your entire guitar's intonation off because it messes with your guitar's neck relief. Third, past Eb, 10 gauge strings are too sensitive, which in turn makes me play badly and further ruins my intonation due to finger pressure and slight bending. I've been using a pitch-shifting effect on my interface for the past couple years to compensate these problems, but it muddies up chords and doesn't sound too great. So now, I just use a dedicated guitar for tunings C to D.

I have Eb standards, D-standards, and a single C# standard ATM. With floyds it's just better that way so you're not adjusting things all the time.

Only a pedal steel guitar in open E, for slide. Other than that, everything's in E standard, the way god intended it.

Re: Do you have a designated guitar for a specific tuning?

Everything in Eb standard, the way the devil intended it :firedevil

My seven string is tuned to B standard.

My Les Paul and SG are in Eb my B. C. Rich is standard tuning. My bass player tunes to Db, Ab, Dd, Gb it opens up a lot of tonal possibilities and options for writing.

Re: Do you have a designated guitar for a specific tuning?

I've had guitars in E, Eb, D and C# over the years and currently have only one guitar left in Eb with the rest in E since I bought a Digitech Drop pedal which made life much easier being able to keep them all in E and use the pedal to drop down.

Most of mine are in standard tuning. Have a tele 5 string tuned to open-G (keith richards tuning), and a LP Jr tuned to open-E for slide...

Re: Do you have a designated guitar for a specific tuning?

I have 3 electrics tuned to:

E Standard (Allparts Strat, 9-46)
Drop C (Ibanez SZ, 10-52)
Drop A (Squier Strat, 11-56)

I used to have two guitars only recently and that was a major pain.

Re: Do you have a designated guitar for a specific tuning?

I have a Martin 000-16C used pretty exclusively in open D.

Re: Do you have a designated guitar for a specific tuning?

All of 'em are in E standard. I don't sound good in drop tunings just like Megadeth songs don't sound good dropped.

Have you ever looked into Digitech's The Drop pedal?

My Tokai CDII is usually in drop-D, though right now, I have a feeling it's in 'was C# standard'.

Not anymore. I used to keep my white Sheraton in open E tuning, though. I sold that guitar 11 years ago; it was the last time I ever kept anything in a non-standard tuning. I used to use double drop D tuning for a handful of songs in that same band, but I would just re-tune to do that.

All mine are in E standard. I've dinked around with other tunings a few times and have just decided that I like standard best.

That being said, I will say that I have been known to go drop-D for some songs and I kinda like it, but anything lower just sounds wonky to me.

Most of mine are in D except for my 7 string which is in E standard.

Yes. I have guitars in all kinds of different tunings.

Re: Do you have a designated guitar for a specific tuning?

I often will have one of my Rics tuned to open D if the set calls for it.

Re: Do you have a designated guitar for a specific tuning?

For me, having guitars intonated for different tunings was a huge logical justification for having multiple guitars.
