The only middle pickup i have is a emg 89 and my guitar is wired a bit differentely.I got the idea from some cheap-ass beginner strat which had three little two-way switches to turn every pickup on or off individually. I use the 89 in humbucking mode quite often but it's rarer for me to use it split since i have my strat if i need single coil sound.

My 70's era strat has stock pickups and I use the middle pickup a lot. Most of my playing is done in position 4, but neck alone or middle alone is where I am at the rest of the time.

pos 4 is pretty useless to me, i have a lil '59 in the bridge and it just sounds odd.

on it's own, i love it in a loud band situation. it sits smack in the little pocket between 'cutting' and 'warm' IMO..

generally no, but it depends on the set

I found the mid position on the Stack Plus test set had a surprisingly good mid pos tone

i use the middle pickup by itself quite a bit. but i almost never use positions 2 and 4. so i was forced to pick choice one.

I don't ever use it for *real* sounds, more as an effect. I only really like it with the tone rolled WAY back, or on zero.

All the time. I have changed pickups, thoughl. With a standard strat I never play the middle on its own. But I need the middle for Janick Gers' leads!

It really depends on the guitar and on the set of pickups! In some cases the bridge pickup is just too bright and the middle pickup works great as an alternate for it. And in some cases it offers a better rhythm sound than the neck pickup. So rather than making rules about always using it or never using it, I listen to what the guitar has to say about the matter... :saeek:

As for the notched positions, it wouldn't really be a strat without them, would it?
