Major General GAS
Why or why not?

For me, if it's something that leaves the house and would p!ss me off to have to re-purchase then it gets coverage. My guitars and amps are covered but odds & ends like my pedalboard are not.

Re: Do you insure your gear?

Most homeowner's policies provide some coverage, even if you use it elsewhere and it is damaged/stolen. FYI.

My problem is that I really need to up the contents coverage in my policy...:smack:

(since my musical gear alone would eat up most of the coverage. Ah, but who needs furniture anyway:wink: )

My gear is insured under renter's insurance from Allstate. I'm in good hands :)
Make sure you check the terms. If you earn money with the equipment (i.e., gig), a lot of homeowners/renters insurance policies won't cover you. :(

Re: Do you insure your gear?

I insure mine thru ASCAP with a company called MusicPro, which has great prices and insures for 'full replacement value' on every piece of gear, no matter where it is, no matter if you are a Pro or not- it even insures computer gear. I believe you have to be an ASCAP member though. It rocks.

Being an ASCAP member might get you a discount but hack hobbyists like me can get insurance through MusicPro, too. My gear is insured with 'em. :D

Re: Do you insure your gear?

Covered by homeowners ...

Outside of that I have a warning on my case and I take serious views on theft of personal property as I've had guitars stolen before.

"If they've got light enough fingers to steal ... those fingers are light enough to break"

Re: Do you insure your gear?

Anybody an insurance salesman? - nearly half of those who have responded have no insurance:rolleyes:

Re: Do you insure your gear?

I should probably insure my stuff, since alot of it's valuable. A ES-125, GA-30, Squire JV Strat. That's like 4000 right there (or so I say :D)

Re: Do you insure your gear?

I probably should get my gear insured as well. It is covered under my house, but I'm not sure what the gross amount I can get back is. I'm always thinking of something else to get, so I never think to spend money on protecting what it is I already have :D

Re: Do you insure your gear?

i'm not sure if it's covered under my policy...i need to check that out!?

Re: Do you insure your gear?

Each instrument insured singly for "full replacement value" with the Allianz, germany´s largest financial conglomerate and the "vendor" of all of my insurances. They may cost a hair more, but they don´t d!cki you around when you have a claim either, unlike most others. And when you´re talking about 16 instruments, primarily high-end USA guitars and ones that are about 6 months to a year from crossing the "magic vintage line", that gets real important real quick.

Whatever you do, don´t get insured for the "actual value" (dunno what exactly they call it it Engllish). Perfect example of why is a ´59 Burst LP. "Actual Value" is maybe 200-250 bucks or so because of the depreciation. "Full Replacement Value" is in the range of 200-250 THOUSAND dollars (one went off eBay Sweden a few weeks ago for pretty exactly 200k :saeek:

Re: Do you insure your gear?

good thread. There are alot of thugs in my community. I am not sure if I could even fend off the kids on the blocks I have lived on ...they rip off all...insurance is a good thought. :)

Re: Do you insure your gear?

Doesn't seem to have much of a point unless you own a lot of gear... or very expensive gear... But who am I to tell? I'm just 16. I still live with my parents, and my gear isn't pretty much "expensive". Thinking about it, it sounds bothering tho have to list every piece of gear you've got, and worse if you DO own a lot of stuff or have modded it a lot.

But I would be really pissed off if I lost all of my gear with no replacement.

Any gear typically worth gigging is a loss if it's stolen. When a $200 amp gets ripped off you're still out $200 if you don't have any recourse (insurance).

Expensive and vintage gear only ratchets up the numbers.

Personally, my first rule of gigging is to never gig anything I can't bear to part with. When you gig it isn't a question of if you'll have something stolen, but a question of when something will get stolen.

I always view insurance as a backup sort of thing. If you can get compensated for your loss, then great. but never count on it. Insurance companies don't stay in business by just writing checks to everyone. Which is why you also need to consider a comfort level with the cost of your rig and how quickly you can replace something.

A MIM Strat can be replaced quickly, easily and cheaply. A 63' Strat can't.

There's tons of little tips for gigging that never occur until you've been doing it for awhile. Never use milk crates for gear; with the tops being open it's easy for someone to grab something, or even the entire crate, and walk off with it. Milk crates are highly portable, small enough to hide easily and common enough to not really make folks look twice at them.

Re: Do you insure your gear?

The gear I gig with is insured. I sometimes wonder about it - with the amount I've paid in premiums over the years I could have bought a nice guitar.

But I couldn't afford to replace the lot.

Well, I could, but it wouldn't go down well with Mrs_F. :wall:

Re: Do you insure your gear?

Bump. The recent thread about folks' most costly gear expenditure got me thinking that this might be worth discussing.
