I like vintage sounding pickups waaay more. There seems to be some extremely sweet tone involved with them all :) I like modern pups on occasion though.

Re: Do you like Vintage or Modern sounding pickups?

I agree! Vintage all the way, no matter whether we are talking Humbuckers or single coils.

Re: Do you like Vintage or Modern sounding pickups?

i like em both for different reasons

you could never get my 59 out of the neck of my 540s .. nor could you get the JB outta my i88.13

Re: Do you like Vintage or Modern sounding pickups?

I'm a huge fan of modern pick ups and modern sounding music, and I don't mean the bands you see on MTV or something :laugh2:

I'm always looking for a singing tone with lots of clarity under a reasonable amount of gain and I feel the tone I get from modern pick ups like the JB are really awesome.

Re: Do you like Vintage or Modern sounding pickups?

Both.

I prefer modern sounding humbuckers and both modern and vintage single coils.

Re: Do you like Vintage or Modern sounding pickups?

I dunno. It probably depends on where you draw the line between vintage and modern (and, for that matter, how you define those terms).

Re: Do you like Vintage or Modern sounding pickups?

vintage because bands rocked back in the 60's and 70's with vintage pickups. Heck, Maiden did metal with PAF's in self titled, killers, and number of the beast. Now they do it with hotrails to sound more contemporary, but i liked their old tone much better, very transparent and heavy at the same time.

Re: Do you like Vintage or Modern sounding pickups?

i guess i like vintage/modern pickups.

you know, pickups like the DMZ super distortion, sh-5 custom

not that hot, but not...not hot :D

Re: Do you like Vintage or Modern sounding pickups?

Both are good for different reasons,
Vintage pickups for their raw, oldshcool like tone
and modern for various other uses.

Re: Do you like Vintage or Modern sounding pickups?

There are good vintage sounding pickups, and there are good sounding newer pickups. On the flipside of that, there are alot from both groups that sound like A$$. It depends what sound I am looking for. Just because something is old, it dosent mean it is better.

Re: Do you like Vintage or Modern sounding pickups?

im a huge fan of the antiquity line and other vintagey single coils and in general i like vintage style buckers as well but that has alot to do with the music i play. i still keep one guitar loaded with a set of screaming hot pups. qp flat neck, jbjr bridge in the middle and a 17k c5 will allen head poles in the bridge, its a fun guitar to play

I'm not sure you can call the JB "modern", since Seymour originally wound it in the early 70's for Jeff Beck's Tele Gib. It's a great pickup for sure, but not really modern.

Re: Do you like Vintage or Modern sounding pickups?

Well, ised to be into more modern sound until my local guitar shop owner had me a play a vintage gibby semi-hollow with origianl pickups......now I know my needs are for antiquities or vintage buckers ALL THE WAY. I don't even like my 59' or JB much anymore! And they are phenomenal pickups to tell the truth!

Re: Do you like Vintage or Modern sounding pickups?

i am of the opinion that those vintage PUs do modern tones well too. i recently bought the Fender Am Series 50th Anniversary Strat & there are a trio of vintage '50s single coils in there, but they do modern, high gain tones very well.

Re: Do you like Vintage or Modern sounding pickups?

I like both, but I tend to prefer lower output vintage pickups.

When a pickup is wound hot it sounds compressed and squashed to me.

They can be a lot of fun to wail the blues with, but ultimately real hot pickups can sound a little bit adolescent and corny.

Re: Do you like Vintage or Modern sounding pickups?

I'll use whatever it takes to get the tone I'm looking for. Mostly its been more modern type pups, but if Vintage pups do it cool, if active pups do it, cool too.

Re: Do you like Vintage or Modern sounding pickups?

I think vintage pickups sound better under clean tones and high-gain where a lot of definition/lead clarity is needed.

Re: Do you like Vintage or Modern sounding pickups?

yeah

and in the neck position you get that sweet smooth tone!!
