I've had mine blocked, dive only, and floating. It's floating now with a tremel-no so I can switch if the song I'm playing has double stop bends.

A floating floyd does much better chordal vibrato than the dive only set up, and the option of which way to take a note is more fun when improvising.

A floating Floyd truly has that tonal and vibrato character to it that you either love or hate. I love it.

I like hearing it when others are playing but it just never worked for me.

If the bridge is recessed, floating is OK. If not, I prefer it against the body.

This basically describes how I feel about it. All of my bridges except one (my Walnut San Dimas style) are set against the body...but I don't have any Floyds. I prefer Floyds to be recessed and floating because you can flick the bar and get a cool growl sound. But seeing as I went from all Floyd equipped guitars to no Floyds I guess I just don't care for Floyds all that much.

Floating with a locking nut, assuming that the guitar has been set up properly, and the trem settings are matched to the string gauge and tuning. I struggled with floating trems for a long time when I was a noob. Once I learned how to set them, stability improved and they can be a lot of fun. Definitely not for someone that changes tunings often. Set it, and LEAVE IT.

It has to be floating to have any use at all for me. Pretty much the only thing I do on a vibrato is pull up.

Wouldn't that be too much? I set it around 2.8mm and 2.35mm at the 24th fret and the pull range has already reached its maximum: the block hits the body while the saddles don't.

I like my action low but the strings a ways above the body. I also do my own Floyd rout so I don't have an issue with the block hitting the body too soon.

Actually, if we consider Floyd Rose himself to be "God" here, didn't he have them set up non-floating and somebody else introduced the idea of floating them?

The floyd rose trem is just a better designed, beefier version of the strat trem. Hendrix floated his, and I'm sure there were many before him.
