Steve Vai.

Nobody did a recessed route before he did the... What's it called? Lion's Claw? Something like that.

Can't think of any.

Re: Do you like your Floyd Rose floating or not floating?

I have it slightly floating, my Jackson has the recessed rout. Trem sits almost parallel to the body but due to route I´m able to pull it up a bit. It won´t pull the note up more than almost a 1/2, but it gives me the possibility for vibrato which is not just the lowering the pitch of the note.

In my Squier I earlier had the trem blocked, but now it´s floating. I´m not a heavy abuser of the Strat bar so it gets gently use, like SRV in songs such as Lenny and Riviera Paradise.

And yeah, I *think* he called it the "lion's claw" or whatever. He did recess his floyds before he got 'em Jems, though, or so I've heard.
Yeah, the Green Meanie was recessed at some point (not originally, though).

Wasn't he also one of the first people, if not the first person, to us a 5-way HSH combination?
I wanna say there was an Ibanez Roadstar with that setup before that, although their catalogs seem to be disagreeing with me there. Looks like they did have a bunch of HSS setups until Vai brought the RG/JEM body shape to them.

If I weren't at work I'd go perusing old Jackson, Charvel, etc., catalogs to see if I find anything.

Re: Do you like your Floyd Rose floating or not floating?

I really like aspects of both floating and non-floating Floyds. Recessed, non-recessed, decked, floating... it's one of the reasons freaks like me have so many guitars.

Re: Do you like your Floyd Rose floating or not floating?

Hiram Bullock had an old 60's strat that he bought in the 70's.
It had the HSH installed when he bought it, two old Gibson buckers and the org single in the middle.
Eddie VH also had a Fender with a bucker in it, but that was a HSS....so the HSH is probally a 70's thing....
I seem to recall Alex Lifeson having one as well...before the BL equipped one, it was also HSH....and that was in the 70's as well.

What I'm finding interesting here, at least in our little corner of the world:

While floaters are winning, a lot of people like non-floaters. Makes you wonder why the floaters dominate in manufacturing.

'tis easier to block than to route.

Re: Do you like your Floyd Rose floating or not floating?

I want mine to ;levitate. Zero gravity floyd rose that floats in some sort a mystical magnetic field.

Re: Do you like your Floyd Rose floating or not floating?

I'm workijg on putting together a dinky-caster with a recessed floating Floyd... Also have a 2 post trek strat that I've bogged out the trek hope for more range both up and down...

Re: Do you like your Floyd Rose floating or not floating?

Ive got a strat hm with the recessed bridge and a kramer with a floating bridge, and I like the floating bridge if your doing alot of dives and pulls. I guess it depends on what you like personally.
