Do you prefer slanted or straight 4x12s?

Re: Do you prefer slanted or straight 4x12s?

I have a marshall half stack with a slant cab which I play right next to at home.. I got the slant because I used to have a straight cab and I could only REALLY hear my tone unless I ducked down to the height of the center of the cab.. little did I know but my tone was WAY too bottom-heavy for my tastes and I couldn't even notice it from 6 feet high... hopefully the sound coming from the slant hits closer to my ears now

Re: Do you prefer slanted or straight 4x12s?

I prefer straight cabs..... Live most really won´t notice a difference, esp not the masses, but recorded a Straight cab has a little more "thump" due to the slightly larger resonance shamber created by the larger cabinet ;)

Most impiortant difference is in projection , though... most straights blow the sound out in a focused "beam", causing flanks issue of having to kneel or standa farther away to properly hear.... IIRC Slanted cabs with the anglied top baffle are designed to counteract this and let the player heve a slightly better impression of his tone.....

BTW, the "original" 4x12 was actually half of an 8x12... IIRC Jim designed the 8x12 and then out of pity for The WHo´s roadies redesigned the 8x12 into todays "stack" ;)

That would explain 8x10 bass cabinets a bit better, as well. Those are smaller than a fullstack though, so I assume there was no need to redesign.
