Do you really need a Tubescreamer pedal.

Re: Do you really need a Tubescreamer pedal.

Do you need tube screamer? NO, but you do need some sort of "boost" pedal whether it's a OD or Distortion pedal. It's very handing for using it as a clean or dirty volume boost, a different tone/channel or to help out eq.

Re: Do you really need a Tubescreamer pedal.

Can you get a sorta Tubescreamer Tone with ordinary cheap Overdrives (Boss, Digitech, Cool Cat drive etc.) and just fiddle with your Amp's EQ or an EQ pedal. Increase the Mids, Lessen the Bass ?

Thanks

Re: Do you really need a Tubescreamer pedal.

for nearly every case where someone would use a tubescreamer, I use a boss super od. I guess I like that configuration of diodes better. anytime I plug in the tubescreamer the whole sound seems to get smaller and kind of piercing, but it's nice for the occasional solo to make it jump out. don't understand the use of it for rhythms.

Well no, you can't just EQ an amp and get the tonal characteristics of a TS, it doesn't work like that dude. Welcome to the real world :laugh2:
The TS-7 IS CHEAP anyway man. Just get one and be done with it

Re: Do you really need a Tubescreamer pedal.

I love my stock TS-9. I've tried other OD pedals, and they just don't do it for me. Like a lot of people, I use it in front of a high gain amp to add just a little "umph" to my tone. I back off on the gain of the amp just to use the pedal. There is some tonal quality that it gives me that I just can't reproduce with my amp.

Re: Do you really need a Tubescreamer pedal.

Yes, you need a TS or a good clone or variant in your rig.

Re: Do you really need a Tubescreamer pedal.

I have a Ts7, Bad Monkey, and a BYOC Overdrive- I can't see spending big $$ on a TS-type pedal at all, although I use mine all the time. There is no reason to buy the expensive variants, other than bragging rights.

Re: Do you really need a Tubescreamer pedal.

Several years ago I got curious about TS pedals to hit the front end of tube amps but I found it didn't really do it for me. There was a definite change in the tone but I didn't really like it too much.

Now I'm back full circle wanting an OD... You may not NEED a TS style pedal but it's nice to have the option. I'm waiting on a Fulldrive 2 for that very purpose.

Re: Do you really need a Tubescreamer pedal.

I use the TC Electronic Nova Drive and TC Electronic Vintage Overdrive. I use them because they offer different tonalities.

One....hehe I have owned TC stuff from a 2290 to the "incredible" chorus, and a few others...
That started in the 80's.....the 2290 is cool.....but perhaps abit too studio perfect for guitars.
Still have one old booster/dist pedal(and it suck so hard..hehe)
Then they had T-rex build them some.....that went well....
None of their new digital stuff sounds very good really...but well as long it is not me who has to use that crap I am ok;)

One of their old bosses once said that pedals was a waste of time;)
Hehe
I live in the same town as they are located, had a few friends who have worked there, had tried out their stuff since the 80's.
So yeah..."I just had one that did not work out for me" heh

Re: Do you really need a Tubescreamer pedal.

I've always had some sort of TS variant around, starting with an original 808 in 1980, which I foolishly sold in '83. In the late 80's I returned to that sound with a TS-10, which sounded closer to my ears to the original than the later TS-9's, but was unfortunately poorly built and didn't stand up to the constant road use. I tried several others but settled on the Landgraff Dynamic Overdrive, which offers a very robust TS tone along with a couple of different, more 'open' sounding clipping modes on a toggle, all of which come in very handy. I like having the option of the TS type of mid squish in amongst other, more open sounding overdrives. I like how the TS sounds sit between Fender guitars and amps, taming the extremes and giving them a good poke in the mids.

Cheers........................................ wahwah

Re: Do you really need a Tubescreamer pedal.

I like a TS (or its many copies and variants) into a clean amp, but I LOVE a TS + another pedal into a clean amp, and I also LOVE a TS into an already dirty amp for a liquid singing lead tone.

There are plenty of good TS style pedals if you don't want the Ibanez one. I like the Route 808 and the BBE Green Screamer for outright clones.

There's also the BOSS SD-1, which is an excellent overdrive in its own right, and can be made to sound very TS-like with some mods (the two have very similar circuits). If you don't have much money and want a good OD, that would be my pick.

Holy sh*t, I almost fell down of my chair. I'm totally shocked :eyecrazy:
I would recommend you a hearing test. Also a brain test, you talk too much bullsh*t. Being Danish would cost you nothing.
Well, each on his own.

I'd be careful about accusing one of the more respected forum members of having a bullsh!t opinion. Just because you think TC stuff is great doesn't mean everyone else does too.

Re: Do you really need a Tubescreamer pedal.

let me guess... you owned one and it didn't work for you. So, obviously all TC pedals are crap. Where have I heard that? ohh yep, in some Hamony Central reviews. A lot of experienced kids in that forum.

All I could think of when I read this was... "does he realize Vasshu's background?"

I knew you'd have a good response. :beerchug:

Re: Do you really need a Tubescreamer pedal.

He does not seem to get that the more funner part of here, is that we are quite different, and usually have our tounges deep into the cheecks when talking sh!t around here :D....
As for TC.....it is defently on the sterile side, and they have never wanted anything else.
That is hardly news...hehe
