Do you really need a Tubescreamer pedal.

Re: Do you really need a Tubescreamer pedal.

Hi guys,

People describe the Tubescreamer as having a Midrange hump, and little Bass,

But I read somewhere that it actually has even midrange, but the lack of Bass make it sound like it has a Mid hump,

The Tubescreamer clone I am planning to get in the future is a Retro Sonic TS 808 Overdrive

1) So Guys, Do you really need a Tubescreamer ? ...... or Can you get that sorta Tubescreamer Tone with ordinary cheap Overdrives (Boss, Digitech, Cool Cat drive etc.) and just fiddle with your Amp's EQ or an EQ pedal. Increase the Mids, Lessen the Bass ?

2) Any Forum Bros. using a Tubescreamer as there Main Overdrive ?

Opinions on it ?

Thanks

Everyone will have a diff answer to your TS808/9 question.

To me, both the 808 & 9 do have a little mid hump and not enough bass response.

For OD, i go to the Boss BD-2 (stock) & T-Rex Mudhoney.
Never used an 808/9 for my main dirt . . . just not my tone, at all.

For the blues guys . . . this might be a little nifty Ibanez 15watter.

Built in 808, before the pre amp.

Re: Do you really need a Tubescreamer pedal.

I have a TS9 moded by John Spina from here (he is not doing the mods anymore). Its one of mine main pedals, its a first thing in the chain (before whah). It hits my pretty driven Laney AOR. Stays onn for about 80 percent of the time, pretty much part of the foundation for my main crunch tones. I used MXR 401 in the loop for the lead boost. TS adds a lot of brightness and chime, and it has a mid hump in a sense that makes your amp cut through in the mix a lot better, a lot. I wish John would comment on this one ...

Re: Do you really need a Tubescreamer pedal.

This looks like a fun TS-tuubskreemer clone !

Re: Do you really need a Tubescreamer pedal.

Well, if you play a Strat with vintage pickups, run it through a Fender amp and play the blues - then you DON'T need a Tube Screamer. Get a DS-1 or a Fuzz. ;)

Re: Do you really need a Tubescreamer pedal.

The Greenie Pedal from GFS and Digitech B. Monkey are Inexpensive Tubescreamer Clones,

Are those pedals good representation of the Tubescreamer tone,

Opinions on those pedal :)

Thanks

Heres the Difference between a Tubecreamer type pedal and a regular Overdrive, You could clearly hear the Mid Hump on the Route 808 :)

Is there a question in there? A statement? Hard to tell...

Re: Do you really need a Tubescreamer pedal.

I use a tubescreamer as my main overdrive and I think it's just perfect. It adds just a little bit of bite to my amp and gives me the sound I'm looking for. There's nothing I can do with my amp to make it sound like that. I've never tried the clones.

This. I use my TS9 as a boost. I've used other pedals but keep coming back that that TS9.

The Raptor I ordered may very well knock my TS9 off the pedal board though...

I wasn't at all trying to be snotty...inflection is hard to type!

I was just saying...

now, the TC stuff...you guys that like it can kep it all...not for me!

AnalogMan however...I love that stuff!

Fanboi...sho nuff!

Re: Do you really need a Tubescreamer pedal.

Didn't need a tubescreamer, if you're talking about the Ibanez's. I did not like the mid hump on the TS-9. The TS-808 was much better, but was too tame when I needed a bit more of the edge in some situations. Got an MI Audio blues pro and it solved alot of things. I even prefer the Boss SD-1 or the Bluesdriver over the overpriced tubescreamers. The digitech bad monkey's tone is amazing for the price, but was too noisy for me. Picky much? Possibly!

Re: Do you really need a Tubescreamer pedal.

Well....still who cares??
I don't like it either;)
Still so what about my offendion??
Not that it matters to anyone, people use what works for them.....well they should....
But all they do is......ask ask...no try for themselves.....how do you like this, how do like that....how is it working??
And so on...well it is ok, but it is on the heavy side on not doing much yourselves anymore...people walks the path of convinience today.
But that is just my...erm opinion...haha
Anyways Hardwire CM-2 if you want a good overdrive that can do that TS thing among other things...

heh

Re: Do you really need a Tubescreamer pedal.

Vasshu, I thought the original Hardwire were 18v pedals, are they now 9v? I know jack about voltages so maybe I'm mistaken on what the specs mean vs. what it runs at.

If they did change, possible difference in sound since gen 1 and gen 2 pedals?

I've got some paypal cash just sitting there and was thinking of giving it a shot.

Re: Do you really need a Tubescreamer pedal.

When it comes to Tube Screamers very few people have less experience or knowledge than me, but I have to say I am a big fan of the humble Bad Monkey. I love it when something inexpensive and widely available does such a great job. To me it sounds excellent either boosting a crunchy Marshall or adding smooth overdrive to a clean(ish) amp. Every home should have one.
