do you rest your pinky on pickguard?

Re: do you rest your pinky on pickguard?

Yes I do rest my pinky on the guitar. Especially when I'm fingerpicking. Lew

Re: do you rest your pinky on pickguard?

Generally I rest my pinkie (sometimes my 3rd finger) for riffs etc on the highest 4 strings. My fingers are too short to do that when I'm playing on the heaviest 2/3 strings, so I sometimes rest my pinkie across the higher strings, or just leave my hand free-floating.

Exceptions are when I'm palm muting, if I'm trying to use pinched harmonics (I find anchoring my hand slows me down and prevents me from finding the right spot to pick so easily), when I'm strumming 6 or even 7 string chords (my fingers are too short to rest my fingers on the guitar while I do this), and when I'm playing either of my seven string guitars because they don't have pickguards

And of course I'd find it impossible to fingertap with my pinkie on the pickguard ;)

Re: do you rest your pinky on pickguard?

Most of the time I rest my pinky on the pick guard of my strat. Occasionally I don't rest it there but when I do I find I can miss string. Although I can also do Pete Townsend-style windmills and still hit any single string that I want.
I wouldn't worry about people telling you that resting your pinky is an incorrect habit that you must break. There are a lot of things that are "wrong" that sound good

Technically speaking, gripping the neck with your thumb over the top ( a la Jimi, SRV, and Jimmy Page) is incorrect but every body does it. Heck guitar feedback was considered a problem way back!

If it sounds good , play it. Try learning both methods (resting Pinky and not resting pinky) then decide which sounds best and is easier for you.

Re: do you rest your pinky on pickguard?

wow

As you're talking about it I'm just realising that I've never examined where my pinky exactly is. :smack: I always play by instinct for let's see, uhm, 15 years. I remove pickguards (I use LP style guitars) so it is not there but I probably leave some fingers on the strings for hi-gain muting or maybe not, I don't know...

I think all the positioning depends on hand properties. Everyone has a different picking "fulcrum" of the palm&fingers and all depends on finding the good balance. I agree with the thing: what is effective and works - works. Try to impress Django Reinhardt or Tony Iommy that it is not possible to play well with clipped/defective fretting fingers :headbang:

Re: do you rest your pinky on pickguard?

hmmmm.....

i don't know if i do or not...?

i'll have to pay attention to it when i get home...!?

Re: do you rest your pinky on pickguard?

now that i think of it i kidna do!!!!!! onmly for riffs and soloing guess not for strumming chords

Re: do you rest your pinky on pickguard?

I do have a habit of anchoring my pinky on the body of the guitar and a few teachers tried to break me of it. I need to work harder at it. :smack:
