Do you think if EVH used his old gear...

Re: Do you think if EVH used his old gear...

i will start by stating that i am not a big fan of van halen personally, but i have to ask why anyone would want an artist to regress? even if you prefer the tone he got before as compared to the current tone. that would have been like asking picasso to paint the same way he did when he was a young man (blue period) when he was in the height of his analitic cubism stage. it was all a progression and usually the people that liked the earlier pieces didn't like the new ones but to be true to himself he had to keep going and now that we get to look back on the work we find a great body of work that flows and chages with the artist over time. so now i ask again, why would we want any artist to regress for us?

i, too, am not a huge VH fan - although i was for the first 4 albums way back in the day ...

as for 'regression', i understand the sentiment .. but i think there is a flip side .. if a person was pursuing his / her art as a sole expression of their soul, then i could understand their wanting to follow their muse exclusively ... but in this day and age, 'artists' are nothing more or less than commercial entertainment products (yes, some of them have breathtaking, even revolutionary, talent - but they are just entertainers) ... if 'their public' no longer is entertained by their product, it dies in the market place ... so the answer to 'why do they want the artist to regress?' is 'because that is what entertains them' ... when i am no longer entertained, i am no longer a consumer of their product ...

just my 2 cents

Wait, is Eddy making a come back that I haven't heard about? Has he released a new CD or anything? As for my small knowledge of EVH, he hasn't done anything since the Van Halen days and reunion tours.

Re: Do you think if EVH used his old gear...

Ed's tone on all records is good to my ears for sure but i do enjoy seeing him with the Stripped Charvel Strats! I love the guitars he made with EB and Peavey but i like the fact he had used some stripped strats again...... It's just an image thing and nothing to do with the music that is played on the guitars he uses.... I have a neck off a Wolfgang and i have been thinking of making a custom strat body with a stripped paint job for it.... be a lot cheaper then buying one of those Charvels.

The "Best of Both Worlds" 2 disc set was released last year with three new songs, followed by a tour. Or do you mean more recent than that?

Anything from the past five years. Has he released any solo-instrumental albums or anything? I've never really gotten into EVH too much.

I understand your point and I know that EVH has evolved since those days. It was more me listenig to VH and then VH3 and thinking "If he played VH3 through his Marshall/Charvel would he sound like the original albums?" I'm not necessarily saying one's better than the other, I was just wondering how he's evolved.

As to artist regression, its funny to me when you brought that up because many of us have been guilty of wanting a particular tone from a particular album in the past - many artist's evolution has never quite stacked up to the "good ol' days" ie Clapton. And we as fans hopefully want them to recapture the form that made them so great.

Re: Do you think if EVH used his old gear...

Sometimes arist's need some direction when recording.

One thing i've noticed watching the various "metalica in the studio" dvd's is that good ole bob rock seems to hang around like a bad smell. A competent producer seems like a very good idea for bands/players who need an objective critic.

My take on Ed's evolution/regression is he really doesn't give a crap about compromising with anyone else anymore and I can't really see another quality VH album. He'll make a record without a good producer, play with alot of distortion, etc. I say good luck to him.

Re: Do you think if EVH used his old gear...

The local radio station was spotlighting Boston last night. The DJ was talking about Tom Scholz and the Power Soak. Then the DJ says, The Power Soak is what Eddy Van Halen used to get his sound.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
