Does anybody use the JB for anything different than heavy rock/metal?

I don't if this has been asked before, anyway...

I have a combo with a 59'n and a PAF classic bridge which I love. But sometimes I miss the output of a high output bucker when I switch to the bridge. I have a JB lying around which I tried in different guitars and wirings and never really liked. For me it wasn't clear enounght and I couldn't get a slightly distorted tone out of it. It had be clean or distorted. :smack: And the distortion was like narrowed in the fecuency spectrum, like everything was upper-middy, no complex textures.

But then I read all this threads claiming that JB is a very versitile pup. May be I'm missing something.

Do you use it for other styles apart from heavy rock or metal? If so, do you have any clips?

They sound pretty good for blues/rock sorta stuff in the right guitar.

Blues cat Robben Ford uses the JB. Or how about JB himself on Blow by Blow. That's certainly not metal. The the JB can be anything you want it to be, just learn how to use it.

Heavens yes! I've got one in my Washburn Falcon (80s Wing Series) and my band does all kinds of music. It's never failed to rise to the occasion.

You can play all kinds of music on all kinds of equipment. Forget about the stereotyping and just do it! I used to play country with an SG loaded with an Invader and a Dirty Fingers. And I used to play folk music with a classical guitar. It's all about what you do to make it work.

My answer would be along the lines of what Travis said. I dont use it for anything. I have found it great for solos but, I dont think it excels at anything else. You can get away with alot of styles with it but, none of them are great. I cant figure out why the JB is so liked by everyone. I think its just hype myself!!!!!

Your kidding right. The JB produces some of the sweetest blues and classic rock tones around. Great metal pickup too...

I used it for several years in my Ibanez Musician at the bridge position where it added a rather nasal Les Paul tone to it (which I like), not at all enhancing the upper mids. Now it's located in my Höfner semi-acoustic at the bridge which I set up for slide playing (heavy strings tuned down to C#). It perfectly balances the original Höfner neck pickup which is a single coil with high impedance (kind of P-90 lke, so to speak).

+1 The JB is one of the most versatile pickup ever made and the TONE is dead on! I've been using the JB for almost 10 years now and 6 of those years i played as a pro guitarist. I chose the JB because its got the tone i was looking for and not because Johnny Guitar Shredder uses it and so forth. It's a great pickup. It's the only pickup i swear by.

believe it or not i used my jb in a strat with 2 singles to play mostly experimental stuff like sonic youth and dinosaur jr and then turn back around and play my own stuff as well as heavier things like the deftones and here and there my buddy would pick it up and play paranoid on it during breaks. unfortunately my old studio was destroyed and the house we sold shortly after so i cant provide a short of something non-heavy rock at the moment but ill ask my friends back home if theyve got any old demos around

I see there are some people agree with me... and some others don't!!!

Lots of people like the pup, this just gives me again the thought that player makes the noise...

Now I am hearing an old jam between Marin and Soulman, the last uses a JB and sounds great... There is a video in SD site featuring Seymour Duncan itself playing with his Tele-Gib (loaded with a Jazz/JB combo) that rocks!!.

I don't know... I think I gave the JB lot's of oportunities and never really liked it. But you guys, and all that clips, are forcing me to do a new try!!!

i ve been using JB Jr for about 5 years.. actually its a lead hard-rock pickup for me.. last week i have splitted the coils with tone knob to see its responses when it drops to single. and its also good but i have to say that in my opinion a Blues-Jazz pickup shouldnt be in the way the JB is.

if you compare it with Duncan Jazz or 59 or EMG 60 its another concept..

But not one of you has really spoken of a clean tone which is where the JB falls short in my opinion. Its just too dark sounding. Glassy clean with a lot of snap just isn't in its strengths. Versatility is defined by the Seth or 59 in my opinion.

I think the JB could probably do most styles with the right amp and guitar. Personally, I hate the way my playing makes a JB sound. It sounds so strangled and harsh with my hands, guitars and amps. I know guys who can get beautiful singing tones out of JBs though. It's worth a try I think.
