Does anyone do this with a hot neck pup?

By "this" i mean, in a 2HB guitar have a neck PU that is substantially hotter than your bridge pup? Basically, so you can get a solo boost by a simple flick of the selector switch. I know people do the same thing the other way around (bridge pup hottest) but i've been curious about whether anyone has done this (referring to hot neck pup) with good sounding and useable results?

Why not just put one pickup closer to the strings than the others?
Me, I prefer that they equal out in loudness, or, that the bridge be louder than the neck. I play most my stuff from both first (unless the song dictates otherwise) and switch to bridge for more volume. There are also volume boosters for this....

The Peavey Wolfagang is designed this way. Neck pup is hotter.

Re: Does anyone do this with a hot neck pup?

I wouldn't so this. I hate muddy neck pickups. Besides, at the neck position, there is so much string excursion that there is no need for a hot neck pickup.

I did this by accident and love it-
I originally want happy with my necl cool rails as it was too cruchy, loud and dark- But I paralel spin a split it and immedately got the clean strtish sound I was after-

Now when I hit hit the push pull that bypasses the paralel spin, I can get a nice bost off of this pup-

Re: Does anyone do this with a hot neck pup?

Taking an overwound neck humbucker and wiring it up to a Spin-A-Split is really not a bad idea at all. I've been considering it for some time now, wind one up to about 8.7 to 9.5, plug it in to the guitar with the SAS and dial it back just to see what happens. From firsthand experience, I know this concept works great on bridge buckers, why not the neck?

As soon as I get out from this latest round of orders, I'll make myself one and try it out...

Re: Does anyone do this with a hot neck pup?

It's not overly hot, but I've been using a Jazz bridge as a LP neck pickup, and it's turned out to be one of my favorites.

That spin a split pot idea sounds great. I'll bet it'd do wonders for a Hot Rails neck.

Re: Does anyone do this with a hot neck pup?

Some people like a JB in the neck and you can split it for good clean tones ...

Re: Does anyone do this with a hot neck pup?

If I were to ever do this it would be in an attempt to satisfy two goals:

1. Get the sweetness of a neck pup but with the added volume to cut through the mix on solos.

2. To put a little bit of my high output pup GAS and my lower output pup GAS to rest without buying another guitar lol.
*
So Benjy_26, your saying all high output neck pups will be muddy?

And could someone tell me what this Spin-A-Split does exactly? All I got out of a search was basically that as you turn the pot it gradually splits the coils, is that correct?(sorry for my ignorance)

Yeah, that's what I do. Raise the neck pickup higher that is. Works great IMO.

Re: Does anyone do this with a hot neck pup?

A spin a split makes a humbucker go gradually from full humbucker to single coil. The thinking behind is neither the humbucker nor the SC is the best, but maybe something in the middle.
Zhang, i use a 9k 42AWG Unbucker (5k/4k) with a A4 is in the neck on my Hamer. Its not muddy due to the Unbucker effect but very fat. Nevertheless I wouldnt go further. Next step for me is to unwind the 4k side to 3.5 or 3.7 to get it a little tender.
