Does anyone else put a hotter pickup in the neck position?

Re: Does anyone else put a hotter pickup in the neck position?

8.5k? I don't think that's hotter than a JB
No, but it's hotter than most typical neck pickups.
I wouldn't put a JB in the neck unless I were pairing it with something like the Slug in the bridge.

Re: Does anyone else put a hotter pickup in the neck position?

The string vibration is stronger at the neck than at the bridge. So the input to the neck pickup is stronger. Bridge pickups typically have higher output specs to compensate for this and results in a balanced output between neck and bridge. I don't know what I'm talking about but it sounds good, huh?

This is actually 100% correct.

Re: Does anyone else put a hotter pickup in the neck position?

I find it extra odd for EVH to do it because, as was stated earlier, some people use their neck pickup for solos and it would be useful for them, but Eddie's earlier guitars were bridge humbucker only and I believe all of his songs recorded on his destroyer were on the bridge pickup.

Re: Does anyone else put a hotter pickup in the neck position?

I enjoy some extra power in the neck position, but not more than my bridge pickup. My hottest neck pickup is 2 ssl1s in series @ 12k. But then I have an ssl4 and 5 in series in the bridge @ 24k. :bandit:

Re: Does anyone else put a hotter pickup in the neck position?

This is a bit off topic, but has anyone tried a JB in the neck? They are pretty hot.

Re: Does anyone else put a hotter pickup in the neck position?

Some guitars come/came with a 'neck JB'....which is just a jb in the neck posi.

Re: Does anyone else put a hotter pickup in the neck position?

I really, really like the Demon in neck position. Nowhere close to a JB in output, of course, but more powerful than your average neck pickup.
I have a vintage SH-7 (now known as the SH-6N) that's 12.5K with ceramic but I think that'd be a bit too much at the neck for me unless paired with a real beast at the bridge.

Re: Does anyone else put a hotter pickup in the neck position?

I have a JB/C4 in the middle with a Distortion in the bridge that I gave the 3 ceramic magnet set up. The JB/C4 is 15.8k but it still balances with the 17.1k Distortion in the bridge because of the mags. The JB/C4 has an interesting sound which is different than a neck pickup. Can get bridge twang out of it or bassier sounds. I think I'm going to try the Demon in the middle tho, I think it would be perfect.

I'm very curious about the C4 mag. Is it lower strength? Less volume? Softer attack? What's the EQ curve like?
As far as I know I've only ever seen C8 available for humbuckers, although LtKojak has said he tried C3 once.

Re: Does anyone else put a hotter pickup in the neck position?

I'm really liking the A4 for bridge (middle) position. It has the most flat EQ out of all the magnets and it has a starkness that sounds awesome for bridge position. I don't know about the strength since I haven't A/B'd it very well but I assume it's weaker than 5 and 8. The attack is softer than the shrillness of 5, but it isn't soft like 2 or 3. It's pretty cool, you should try it.

Oh, Alnico 4! I'm quite familiar with it- have three different A4 sets, also an A4 in one of my 59Ns. I thought you were talking about a C4, that would be a ceramic 4.

Re: Does anyone else put a hotter pickup in the neck position?

OOHH!! Ha. I meant a JB/Custom hybrid with an A4.

Re: Does anyone else put a hotter pickup in the neck position?

The Hamer Monaco Elite came with a Custom Custom in the bridge and a Custom in the neck. The all mahogany version came with a 59 set.

Re: Does anyone else put a hotter pickup in the neck position?

I've put "hot" pickups in the neck many times and have mismatched them with bridge pickups with great results (as well as not so great results.) It all comes down to personal preference and for the specific need you are trying to address in a certain guitar.

I would suggest that you not let the "traditional way" hold you back from trying a pickup that fits what you are looking for in every way except that it might be "too hot" for the neck position.

Yep. I changed mine out to a Seth Lover neck though. A Custom as a neck pickup was not a great idea, IMO.

Also, everyone who plays a Tele that they put a full size humbucker in for the neck pickup is using a hotter than the bridge set up. Keith Richards comes to mind.

Re: Does anyone else put a hotter pickup in the neck position?

Has anyone actually determined that the neck is hotter than the bridge in the EVH set, besides looking at silly DCR values? From what I understand, there are two different gauges of wire in each coil. Guess that does to "more DCR means more output"?

--> the nearest window.
