It's not that simple. Billy G used and uses alot of differant amps, including Marshall Plexis. He's also been known to record direct with amp simulators like the Rockman. I know one of his favorite recording amps is a vintage 1950 Fender Dual Professional...the two 10 model with the V front and chrome strip running vertically down the front of the amp. I have one just like it...only mine's from '51 and by then they'd changed the name to the Fender Super. Same exact amp, Jensen P10R speakers and cabinet tho.

I'm not sure of what he used on those particular songs, but I've read about his live rig, which is controlled by a tech. Basically, a Marshall JMP-1 pre, being split between onstage cabs and mic'ed speaker coffins under the stage. He also uses whatever 'flavor of the week amp he likes' onstage, so his signal is partially the JMP-1 and another halfstack. Then, he's got about 9 cabs onstage, most of which are empty dummy cabs. He uses a different brand everytime I've seen him. Either Orange or Legend. That stick with all the Bixonics stuck on is kind of a joke, just to emphasize MAJOR GAIN. He doesn't use it for anything. He may have a Bixonic inside a rack drawer that's fed to the JMP-1....all controlled by a guitar tech.

For what it's worth, when my band does "La Grange" (bar band staple
), I get within spitting distance of that tone using my Tele with a JD at the bridge and a Plexi sim on the Boss GT-6 with my 2x12 cab and 6L6 power section. I set the gain on the preamp sim at about the halfway point, the master volume at full, bass at about 75%, mid at 60% and Treble at 50%. Also, I use the #1 channel on the Plexi sim only. To boost for the leads, I stomp on my Vox Valvetone set more for volume than for dirt.
It's not exact, but it gets close. :burnout:

If it sounds good, it's probably close enough. I'd think Billy G gets a slightly differant tone every time he's plugs in too! We all do...I know if I don't, I get bored.

Gibbons used to use some heavy ass strings, like me, but after awhile, he said that he didnt get no difference in tone, just loudness, and if you want it louder, turn the amp up. So he went to what was the easiest to handle.

My girlfriend's dad was a roadie for Heart and ZZ Top back in the day, and I've asked him if he remembers what Billy used (cause, like everybody else I'd imagine, I love his tone) He could never remember what he used, but just that he had a ton of stuff to choose from for each show. So basically, what everybody else has been saying...his rig changed constantly.
(he does play guitar, but only acoustic, so...I didn't figure he'd be up on what kind of amps he'd be using, but figured I'd ask anyway, since he was along for the ride)

He does use light strings. He's been quoted a number of times on that one. I'm paraphrasing: "I use light strings...it takes too much energy to bend heavy ones". When it comes to amps and gear, the Reverend is fond of spouting mucho BS just to mess with people...like the amps he toured with that said "Rio Grande" on them. He said they were custom made by some guy in Mexico. To my knowledge, nobody has ever found any info about them, or the cat that supposedly made them. Who knows? Tweed Fenders and Plexis will put you in the ballpark. Add some PAFs and 8s, and who knows how close you can get?

ok hold on...here we go. The tracks named and lots from that time was a 1958 Tweed deluxe and or a 1966 BF Twin Reverb with a pro co rat. The Rio Grande amps were HOT RODDED Dual Showman heads played through Marshall 4x12 cabs. The Tweed fender he "uses" on stage is completely gutted...it's just for show. The "flavor of the week" amps are also for show...On stage, at least right now, it's a JMP-1 in stero...one side is direct, the other side isthe JMP-1 with the power sections from the JCM 900's. ALL the distortion (live) comes from boxes...he has several, Expandoras, zvex fuzz machine, zvex super hard-on, real tube overdrive...etc The Alamo...was the "lap dog" before the gutted tweed fender. The 2x10 Marshall you've heard about was put together at the Guitar Oasis...it is a 1966 Marshall 100 watt head shoved into a 2x12 bluesbreaker cab. In the Studio (for the last 3 records) He has run the JMP-1 on one side and the Marshall 2x10 on the other. His current Wah-Wah is the new Dano. Yes he does use .008's...even when tuning down to B and A! The Creme Cabs used a few tours ago are Marshall cabs with costom tolex and tubby tone drivers. There are several HOLLOWED OUT 1958ri Les Pauls, and no matter what you hear...the red Gretsch DID NOT come from Bo Diddley and Billy has 3 of them. On Cheep Sunglasses he used the "Bizarktone" which is a ring modulator...To nail the tones on La Grange, Cheep Sunglasses, etc...Do what he did, a BF or SF Fender amp, dry channel, Pro CO Rat, Killer Les Paul!

In concert he uses various preamps and marshall valvestate power amps - they drive a single 12 mic'd in a direct cabinet. All the stuff you see on stage (wizard amps, alamo amp, effects) does nothing. Billy seldom ever tells the same story twice when it comes to his rig today - if you were lucky enough to see him play live in small clubs in the early 70's then you would have seen him play his Les Paul through various fender and marshall amps (sometimes an ampeg, orange or whatever else thrown in).

Billy uses a small Marshall combo that has been modded for many of his recordings. He uses 9 gauge strings ( on the recommendation of B.B. King ). His theory about the strings > " The Grease is in The Groove ". I know what he means. Now, YOU figure it out...ha ha ha ha !!!!! ..........
