No. I tried that years ago, but the latency I got was so bad, I couldn't play. I'm sure better stuff has come out, and I have a better computer now too. Maybe I should look into it.
I had bad experience also years ago. I revisited the computer approach this year and it's working fabulously for me, but it depends on the plugin you use.
The Axe IO One and the NaLex Crunchman (Friedman BE100 model) was the game changer for me, it finally has the feel and the sound I was looking for. Add an M-Wave Chocolate bluetooth midi controller and have fun. When my hardware modelers (Eleven Rack, Ampli Firebox mk1 and mk2) die I will use this setup instead (in a 2u shallow rack).
I'm using Apple Garageband (recording ideas) or Kushview Element (standalone) as an Audio Unit hosts. See THIS POST for giving you an idea.
At 32 samples (1-2ms) my Macbook M1 is running at 10%. I will never use a PC/Windows machine for music, it's driving me crazy enough working on it for my job!
