Does anyone like the Greasebucket mod?

When it was first introduced by Fender as a futuristic "improvement" on the traditional electric guitar design, the Greasebucket mod was talked about quite a bit more than it is now. I never got the chance to put it in any of my guitars, but I'm thinking about putting it in my Eldred modded Esquire.

Given it doesn't have the "bassy preset" anymore, I want another way to get a rolled off, jazz/blues tone. I was thinking about using the Greasebucket mod so that the signal doesn't get too bass-heavy. Has anyone tried a Greasebucket tone control or have any recommendations on cap values for the bass cut part?

I don’t like it. I like that resonant hump you get with the tone control all the way off. The Greasebucket eliminates that.

Re: Does anyone like the Greasebucket mod?

Is it better for blues with or without the resonant hump? I was thinking about going with either a .022 with the Greasebucket mod or .01 without it.

I'm trying to make it so the guitar can sound nice with the tone control between 0 and 5. You know how hard it can be to do that these days.

Re: Does anyone like the Greasebucket mod?

I mostly use the tone control to get that “woman tone.” But between 5 and 10 is good for just rolling a little top end off.

Blues is how you play. Then pick the tone you want. You don’t have to sound like everyone else.

I agree Blues is how you play, I'm just trying to get a usable tone control. What cap value do you use? I use a .022 and that gets me decent usability between 10 and 6. I try to find a .018 to make it better for rolled off tones.

Re: Does anyone like the Greasebucket mod?

I like .022 most of the time. It might be the taper of the pot you don’t like. But tone controls remove the high end. If you are using too much low end on your amp, that turns to mud.

Also while the low end sounds good playing by yourself, or in front of your amp, it uses up too much sonic space occupied by the bass and drums.

Listen to Johnny Winter. He had the treble on 10 on his amps and no bass or midrange!
