Does anyone sell modded Humbucker size P90's ?

Re: Does anyone sell modded Humbucker size P90's ?

Bareknuckle does, but dont get hung up on the magnets. Thats like buying a car cause it has goodyear tires on it.

Could you please give me a little more info because everyone in the forum seems to think for my guitar and amp setup that I need AlNiCo 4 or 5's to get the tone I want. I swear I think I'm getting more confused every time I come here! I have however been told by a certain somebody that you know your stuff so any info you can share with me would mean so much..

Unfortunately, some people on forums like this take magnet swapping to an extreme and put the magnet type at, or near, the top of the list of considerations.

Some guys do really take the whole magnet thing to the extreme and it can be confusing if you are just trying to get a cool set of pups. If you already had a set of pups that you werent quite happy with the sound of then looking to the magnets might be a useful avenue to tweak their tone.

But since you are looking for new pups start with a blank slate and only look to find the pickup with the sound you want not the magnet.

I hesitate a little to give you specific recommendations on pups because i have never played the amp you have and I dont know exactly it will respond but I will give you some stuff to look for.

You said you wanted Angus with more growl and you didnt like the pearly gates. These are 2 decent clues to what you might like. If your amp has decent low end headroom (meaning can it handle some bass without getting flubby or farty) then the Custom 5 would be right up your alley. Its got a brash top end like Angus does and great growl. The downside that can happen sometimes is that the bass is pretty big on it and some amps dont like it. If you dont think that your amp would like the lows then the 59/C hybrid is a great option. Its ruder than a PAF pickup without being over the top and retains some of the PAFs more jangly highs. Another excellent pickup in this area is the SH6 NECK pickup used in the bridge. Less bass than a C5 a bit more power and midrange grind the highs do have more of a scream, crushed glass sound to them that is a bit different from the more jangly bell like highs of the C5 or 59/C

One of those 3 would make you a great bridge pickup

For the neck my first inclination would be a SH55 seth lover. Its a PAF but on the warmer side. If you want a more singing fluid sound try the Alnico 2 pro. If you want a bit more power from your neck slot (i actually like my neck to be slightly quieter than the bridge for clean passages) the Screamin demon kills in the neck slot.

If you are curious about any of these or another pickup or want me to compare them let me know and ill give you the best answer i can.

Something to keep in mind that is very helpful to someone new at this like yourself is that Seymour Duncan does have a 21 day exchange policy if you buy from an authorized dealer. Buy the pup.. play it for 2 weeks and decide if its the one you like. If you dont like it just return it and swap it for another one to try. Its a cool deal and if you are worried about getting the right pup its something you should take advantage of.

BTW I limited my response to Seymour Duncan Humbuckers. If you cant find something that blows up your skirt in that line up I can give you suggestions from other manufacturers.

The BKP stockholm that is under the link in my first post here is just sick. Its louder than many humbuckers but is more open and less compressed like a P90 is. Its great at pushing a simple tube amp

If you really want humbucker sized P90s, I'm sure the SD custom shop would be able to make you some Phat Cats with either A4 or A5 magnets...

Which doesnt help that the wind of the phat cat is "meh" compared to other winds.

The GFS Mean 90s are A5, and cheap. No idea how they sound....

They sound damn good, actually! And not just "for the price" either. I actually sold my Phat Cat set because the Mean 90's sounded better.

The Custom Shop can make Phat Cats with any magnet you'd like. They can also alter the wind to get the exact tone you are going for. Contact them, and see what they can do for you.
