Does changing magnets affect more than just tone?

Does it mess with output too? And will changing an Alnico 5 out to an Alnico 2 give me that singing sound/clarity?

Re: Does changing magnets affect more than just tone?

I believe it affects string pull as well...

Re: Does changing magnets affect more than just tone?

i think the answer to all of your questions is basically "yes" :D

a mag change will effect output, tone, and perhaps to a lesser extent sustain (i think mag effects are more dramatic on single coil pups where the mag/pole pieces are right under the strings)

i dont think that a blanket statement about A5 --> A2 = clarity can be made without knowing all the other variables, but i guess it's a reasonable generalization on which to base experiments ...

it's a good thing that mag swaps dont take a long time .. let us know how your experiments come out :)

Re: Does changing magnets affect more than just tone?

Output is not affected by a magnet swap.

I recently swapped mags in a gibby 500T i had and the output before and afterthe swap was 18k.

Re: Does changing magnets affect more than just tone?

wix, you are confusing different measurements ... output is not measured that way ... what you measured is D.C resistance which is only a function of how much wire is wound around the coil ... i would not expect DC resistance to change with a mag swap ... the magnet effects the AC properties, not the DC properties ... "output" refers to the "volume' of the AC signal ... a more powerful magnet creates a stronger magnetic field that can induce a stronger voltage onto the pup's coil when disturbed by the vibrating guitar string

that being said ... to paraphrase Bill Lawrence ... " no pickup will change a 50W amp into a 100 W amp" :D

the pickup's magnets has nothing to do with its resistance. you can remove the magnet and it will still be 18k.

Re: Does changing magnets affect more than just tone?

For instance. if you were changing an alnico magnet to a ceramic magnet the pickup would most likely have a greater output with the ceramic magnet.

Thanks, guys. I was planning on getting a Humbucker From Hell and putting an Alnico 2 in there to see if it would increase the sweetness. I'll ask the DiMarzio techs and see what they think about that.

As for Duncans, I was considering something that would basically get me a higher output Alnico II Pro (humbucker) sound so that it would sound very solid when split. I think I'll start another thread on that.
