Does coil splitting affect the un-split tone?

I'm going to wire in my new pickups (SH-4 JB / SH-2n) in a week or so and was thinking of wiring in a push/pull control to split the coils. Does doing this have an adverse affect on the tone when the coils are running as normal i.e both together in their full humbucking glory? And I suppose I should ask whether those pickups are worth splitting anyway? Thanks,

A minimalist response. Well - why use more words than necessary.

I am in exactly the same position as you. About to fit an SH4 JB and an SH2 Jazz. I have a HSH set up and I am putting a SSL-Quaterpound in the middle.
Would be interested to hear how you get on and what you think of the tone. Best of luck.

If you don't like the sound of them split you can swap a few wires around and have it go parallel instead guitarelectronics has diagrams for both split and parallel with push pull pots. Just make sure you work out what the proper color scheme is first. You will still get a clean bright sound but with no hum. Parallel coils for neck pickups are my favorite because they don't sound muddy or dark.

I've got an HSH set up too, but I'm having a little trouble with the middle pickup - I originally wanted an SSL-1 but the cavity on my guitar won't take that shape so I then decided on the SVR-1.

In the beginning after listening endlessly to the samples on the website I finally decided I favoured those two pickups and afterwards I found the tone wizzard and it suggested either the SSL-1/SVR-1 too. However, upon emailing Seymour Duncan they suggested the SSL-5 and someone else here suggested the SSL-3, there are just too many choices and I'm not even sure if I know what I want anymore! :dunno:

The minimalist response is spot-on. Will coil splitting affect the full humbucker tone when not split? Absolutely not, zero, zip, nada, bubkus. No worries...

Ooh, I don't think I've actually knowingly heard parallel coils before - I'll have to have a look into that. Thanks for the info.

It does NOT affect their tone. I know because my ESP has that set, and at first it wasn't wired that way. Now it is. Doesn't affect the tone un-split at all.

EDIT: I'm assuming you or the person who wires them up this way does their job right. On mine, the wires leading away that are used during split mode are not shielded, so at very high volume levels I get a bit of feedback, but I'm going to take it back and make them do it right
