Alright, alright. It was the Alice in Chains case years ago.

JB was a detective (some Jerry Bantrell or what I don't remember) and he had a girl Alice who was a sado-maso girl on the maso side and liked to be chained. Everyone knew that when Alice was in chains she used JB for making her scream loud. One day, JB just put Alice in chains but got called that some criminal that he had been chasing for years was seen. He was totally fired up and totally forgot about the girl. Well, the chase took 2 weeks and the poor Alice was still in chains... Ugly story...

I'm showing my age, but I remember Seymour Duncan advertizing litature from decades back that talked about how the JB was indeed the Jeff Beck pickup, and JB stood for Jeff Beck. I recall a storey about how it was used to help restore his Les Paul's tone after a tech replaced his vintage PAF's with new covered Gibson Humbuckers. Also the humbucker tele that Beck used extensively through the late 70's had the prototype JB. So yes at one point in time, the JB did stand for Jeff Beck, at least in the advertizing.

Like Jeremy said, when Seymour built his now-famous Tele-Gib for Jeff -- the one heard on "Cause We've Ended as Lovers" on Blow By Blow, the bridge pickup was nicknamed "Jeff Beck" and the neck pickup was nicknamed "John Milner." Those were later shorted to JB and JM.

We've never had an official pickup endorsement deal with Mr. Beck. So, when someone asks us what JB and JM stand for, we say "Jazz Blues" and "Jazz Model."

Some folks call the JB the "Jeff Beck." And while there's an historical connection between the JB pickup and the man with those initials, any brand name connection is not coming from us... and never has.
