Some of the older ones are really getting pricey! But I like 'em.
The reason I asked is that there was an Ebay auction for a pair that mentioned that Robben used them. I love his playing.
Hmm, never knew that, if it's true.
I'll have to look into that for sure. Their nice speakers from what I remember of them and based on what I've read about them...Lew, what do you think of the clean sounds??
Yeah...the only new G12-65 you can get is in the Heritage series...they do a Heritage 65, greenback and G12H30...all of them are $180.
The G12-65 uses the same magnet frame and cone as the Greenback but the large dust caps takes away some of the top end giving a slightly deeper tone and the higher power voice coil also adds to that.
Is yours a Heritage or is it an original one??
I've always wondered about the difference in tone that comes from wiring speakers differently but to be honest i've never done any type of comparison to see...
From my experience, you need to compare two tones within a micro second of each other to really know! Otherwise, you're probably fooling yourself. No way can you listen to it one way, then rewire the thing and then listen again and really do an accurate comparism. That whole Hovland vs. Orange Drops thing...
umm, sorry i was thinking about larry carlton...:foot:perhaps ev's?
On Celestion's site, they used to say (maybe they still do) that the V30 was developed to emulate the sound of several of their classic ALNICO G12's, that they could obtain to sample, but using the less expensive "H" ceramic magnet, and have higher power handling. They used special lazers to track the cone movements of the alnicos in several situations and then they designed the V30 to emulate those responses as closely as possible. The V30 was designed to be a modern alnico alternative really. I love em- once broke in good.
I saw Robin Ford play about six years ago. I was able to be within a few feet of Robin and his amp rig as he played. He is a great guitarist! He was playing an early 60's RW board tele through a Dumble amp head. The speaker cabs were two Fender 2x12 cabs covered in tweed, with oxblood grills. These were about the same as the modern Fender extension cabs with V30's. I don't know what speakers he had in them though.
