Some of the older ones are really getting pricey! But I like 'em.

Not sure about Roben but I know a lot of guy these days really dig the 65's...funny too because when they came out they were kind of un popular!

I know a lot of the guys that are into Dumbles and Dumble type amps (Two Rocks etc...) are really into them as well as guys that like Celestions in their Fender amps really dig them.

The reason I asked is that there was an Ebay auction for a pair that mentioned that Robben used them. I love his playing.

Hmm, never knew that, if it's true.

I'll have to look into that for sure. Their nice speakers from what I remember of them and based on what I've read about them...Lew, what do you think of the clean sounds??

I like the single G12-65 in my Marshall 4010 alot. It's the only one I've ever used and it's a bit new to me. But it's like you described: kind of like a G12M-25, but I hear it as being a little throatier and deeper. Very punchy. Maybe not quite as much of that chunky fizz to the mids compared to the G12M-25, but it's still there. I like it!

Seems totally capable of producing nice textured clean tones...but so far, I've only been wailing distorted tones through it. I mean, it's a Marshall! That's what I bought it for.

Wish that amp had reverb, like my Chieftan. But it's a way cool amp and I like the one 12 format.

More info on the G12-65:
Celestion Heritage Series G12-65

A forerunner to the G12T-75, the G12-65 was originally created as a higher-power handling version of the G12M Greenback. Recognised as the voice of 1980s rock and blues, the speaker was particularly popular in 4x12 cabinets and is considered by many to be the finest speaker ever produced for use in this classic configuration.

Like the original G12-65, the Heritage Series re-creation of this legendary Celestion guitar loudspeaker has a tone that's best described as sitting somewhere between the G12M and the Classic Lead 80, with plenty of definition for high-gain playing styles without being too bright or aggressive. By adhering precisely to the initial design notes, specifications, materials and construction techniques, the Heritage Series G12-65 dishes up the cherished guitar tones of the '80s with almost unnerving accuracy.

* General specifications Nominal diameter 12", 305mm
* Power Rating 65W
* Nominal impedance 8? and 15?
* Sensitivity 97dB

These puppies are going for $180. new! Man, that seems steep.

Yeah...the only new G12-65 you can get is in the Heritage series...they do a Heritage 65, greenback and G12H30...all of them are $180.

The G12-65 uses the same magnet frame and cone as the Greenback but the large dust caps takes away some of the top end giving a slightly deeper tone and the higher power voice coil also adds to that.

Is yours a Heritage or is it an original one??

I assumed it was an original. Bought it from James Hoffman. It came with the amp. I'm thinking of picking up another pair to put in my two x 12 Matchless speaker cab. Can't descide whether to go with a pair of 8 ohm speakers and wire them in series for 16 ohms or a pair of 16 ohm speakers and wire them in pararllel for 8 ohms! It's a subtle diff if there's any diff at all, but I think I hear a slightly thicker/fatter tone from series wiring...but I'm not sure. What do you think?

I've always wondered about the difference in tone that comes from wiring speakers differently but to be honest i've never done any type of comparison to see...

From my experience, you need to compare two tones within a micro second of each other to really know! Otherwise, you're probably fooling yourself. No way can you listen to it one way, then rewire the thing and then listen again and really do an accurate comparism. That whole Hovland vs. Orange Drops thing...

I agree!

Thats the only reason I've never tested that out...I've never owned more than 1 4x12 or 2x12 at one time...

LOVE LOVE LOVE the 65s. I suspect the reason Celestion eventually ditched them for 75s and V30s was power handling and tighter "grind" for the Metal acts of the late 80s.

I like 75s, but I def prefer the 65s. More open, tight enough bass, better mids without being spikey or grindy and a nice cutting top end that doesn't hurt the ears!

Re: Does Robben Ford use Celestion G12-65 speakers?

Speaking of Vintage 30's, I was reading in Micheal Doyle's book, the History of Marshall, that they were designed to be a 75 watt, ceramic magnet version of the Celestion G12 ALNICO. You know, the Celestion used in the original Vox AC-30 amp.

There's also a nice interview with Ken Bran, designer of the original Marshall's, and he said they were looking for a bass amp when they designed the JTM-45. He also said the original Marshalls were completely inspired by the late 50's Fender tweed Bassman, which was his favorite amp.

On Celestion's site, they used to say (maybe they still do) that the V30 was developed to emulate the sound of several of their classic ALNICO G12's, that they could obtain to sample, but using the less expensive "H" ceramic magnet, and have higher power handling. They used special lazers to track the cone movements of the alnicos in several situations and then they designed the V30 to emulate those responses as closely as possible. The V30 was designed to be a modern alnico alternative really. I love em- once broke in good.

I saw Robin Ford play about six years ago. I was able to be within a few feet of Robin and his amp rig as he played. He is a great guitarist! He was playing an early 60's RW board tele through a Dumble amp head. The speaker cabs were two Fender 2x12 cabs covered in tweed, with oxblood grills. These were about the same as the modern Fender extension cabs with V30's. I don't know what speakers he had in them though.

I think Robben did use V30's at one time. He's one of my favorite players. I saw him around 1974 with Joni Mitchell and just loved his playing then and still love it now. That Tele of his is a '60 I believe. I really like his playing with the Tele better than with his Fender Espirit or Baker. I'm a single coil kinda guy though...I like the clarity. Sometimes when Robben plays humbuckers and turns the volume down on the guitar the tone gets a little muddy when he plays chords...same thing happens to me when I use humbuckers. Lew
