Does the MXR Dynacomp suck?

Re: Does the MXR Dynacomp suck?

I bought an old no-LED model once, I couldn't tell when it was on or off! I sold it on Ebay. The guy loved it and gave me positive feedback so it must-a worked for him! I've got a Guyatone on the way, still waiting for it over a week now from a Gear Page member purchase......getting a little concerned!

Re: Does the MXR Dynacomp suck?

The Dynacomp is decent, but it is very coloured . . . you might want a compressor with a few more options than that. See if you can pick up a Marshall ED-1 Compressor or a Boss CS-2/CS-3. They're pretty decent quality and can be had for cheap used . . .

Re: Does the MXR Dynacomp suck?

I dig it. Have a regular old reissue that I got from Capofirstfret.

Bit of a 'tone-sucker' in bypass but no worse then running a super long cable.

I don't use it for much either...maybe a lead boost or after a wah pedal for clean tones...

Does the country chickin' pickin' stuff really well too. Nails it.

Also mash drums & stuff through the Dynacomp off the mixing desk...

No complaints really.

The Boss might be more 'invisible' or versatile...

I have been watching that one too. I had the CS-3 once , do you know if its better than that? Do you think thats a fair deal?

Re: Does the MXR Dynacomp suck?

i have an old beat up dynacomp and never use it really.... but some players i know love it!!!

Re: Does the MXR Dynacomp suck?

it may sound funny but i love my compressor not sounding significantly different when on/off. i basically use it for cleans to suppress the peaks and boost the dips for a constant output but its always on on my pedalboard.

i've been using a modded cs-3 for the longest time since it does what i need. the tone and pick controls basically compensates for a slight loss of highs and pick attack as with all compressors.

bottomline, i guess one doesn't need to go the booteek route for a clean/transparent comp.

Re: Does the MXR Dynacomp suck?

I have an old MXR Series 2000 Dyna Comp and I actually like it better than the red one. But yeah, it did color the tone a little so I stopped using it. But I still keep it in case I ever decide to use it again.

I've never played a CS-3, but I've heard enough reports from people who have played both to think the CS-2 is probably head and shoulders above its successor.

Do I think it's a fair deal? Probably. Maybe offer $80 shipped. Either way, it's a pedal I'd buy again in a heartbeat. I use it more often than my Analog Man Bi-Comp, which fetches nearly three times the price on the 'Bay.

Buy it. Try it. Keep it or flip it.

Do it.

Re: Does the MXR Dynacomp suck?

Maybe I will. I cant hardly lowball him after discussing it here, now can I.

Re: Does the MXR Dynacomp suck?

I guess I always calling offering less lowballing. I should "make an offer" :).

Re: Does the MXR Dynacomp suck?

Right. Low-balling is offering him $50 when he's asking $90. Of course, he can always say no, so if you wanted, you could offer him your gym shorts. (I'll bet he says no to the shorts for sure.)

Re: Does the MXR Dynacomp suck?

You could also look at the SuperComp if you want a bit more control over the sound. I got one and it works great.

the better compressors i've tried are like that.... you hardly know they are on.... but they add sustain... The Diamond Comp was one of those nice ones!

Re: Does the MXR Dynacomp suck?

My personal opinion:

Scrounge up the $130, and get a Barber Tone Press.

Kills everything that's out there. It's the ONLY one I've found that can actually WORK with high output humbuckers, due to it's blend control.

Works equally awesome with bass, and acoustic guitar.

The last comp you'll ever need.

Re: Does the MXR Dynacomp suck?

Lew and Rick, both sound like good suggestions . I had never thought of any Homebrew stuff. I had looked at the Tone Press for awhile though and was going to grab the one BD2 had posted recently but couldnt do it at the time.
Rick , you say it blow everything away. What else have you tried ,anything listed here or the Carl Martin comp?

Re: Does the MXR Dynacomp suck?

No, and no.

I like my Dynacomp. I've used it for about 9 years.

It might be due for retirement/replacement, though.
