does the orientation of a speaker cabinet matter?

I am trying to reconfigure my very small practice area to accommodate two bass cabs.

They are two Mesa cabs with 1 X 15 & 2 X 10. They are built into in flight cases.

Does it matter from a performance (or any other) standpoint whether they are set up as intended (i.e., horizontally) or turned up so they are sitting on what's actually their left side (i.e., vertically)?

It would be a lot easier for me if I could set them up vertically.

If it matters to you, then it matters. Changing the orientation of the cab will probably change the sound. Whether it 'matters' is entirely subjective, though.

Thanks--I guess all I can do is try it and see.

I stack my cab vertically and I really dig the sound... I'd say theres less bass and the main benefit is its closer to your ears when you stand back or stand in front of it... instead of it blasting your legs

Re: does the orientation of a speaker cabinet matter?

are the cabs ported?

if so dont cover the ports

some cabs get better response on the floor
or backed to a wall

or some such

hard wood floors give more echo and bass

carpet absorbs high frequencies

facing them to a flat concrete wall
will simulate a slap back delay
moving the cabs away increases the delay

No ports on the back. There's a vertical port on the front on the right-hand side. If I turn vertically it will be either on the top or the bottom. I have no choice but to back up to a wall.

This is all very useful info: Thanks!

You know, it probably shouldn't matter, but it might.

I question the orientation of two of my 1-12 cabinets; one is always directly behind the other and they seem to be off in their own little world. The 2-12 is obviously bothered by this and hangs out in another room but the 4-10 is always right next to them and seems to be kinda into it. The 4-12 is off to the side and facing them...I assume it just wants to watch.

Hope this helps.

It does--thanks. I will try to make sure mine get along...
