Does this switch position make anyone else crazy?

Re: Does this switch position make anyone else crazy?

I think every guitar should have the controls out of the way like on the SG-Jr's

I pretty much hit the controls on all of my guitars, except that one!

Re: Does this switch position make anyone else crazy?

I don't understand how you guys manage to hit every single control on the guitar... I regularly play Jags, Jazzmasters, And numerous other things with unreasonable switching options and I can't say I've ever accidentally hit anything.

The volume knob position never bothered me either, If it's not close to the strings I can't volume swell efficiently.

I like that! Check out this one that I saw the other day when I was surfing around the web... it's supposed to be able to able to switch from right-handed to left-handed by just flipping the bridge over and changing the nut, but I liked it for the controls positioning:

Re: Does this switch position make anyone else crazy?

Probably because some people like the switch within reach of their strumming motion.

I've had tons of guitars with 5 ways like that, can't rememeber ever having a problem.

The only setups I dislike are what's on the Charvel pictured above, or the stupid stuff like a Jazzmaster/Mustang/Jaguar.

No. That's my favorite position.

Isn't it funny how we all have our way that works... and they're all different? I love it! Obviously you folks that I just quoted see it different than me and and a couple of the others that responded to my whining:15:, but I just think it's cool to get all the input and try to get something out of it...

This is the only guitar I have with a 5-way, and I was kind of feeling like it was something I wanted to avoid in the future. The mix of differing opinions has done two things for me:
  1. Reinforced that I'm not just crazy for not liking the 5-way
  2. Opened my mind to trying to look at it differently... I can see ways that make it quite handy now

Pretty cool... anybody else wanna weigh in?

Re: Does this switch position make anyone else crazy?

Some people said they liked "versatility" so here goes an option for solving your problem. I put 3 DPDT switches and one push-pull (also a DPDT). The three switches give you 8 sounds, and the push-pull give you a "blow", or direct out, to avoid you hiting the volume by mistake. I hope someone likes it. This is not a "verified" wiring, in otherwords I aint never done it, so it may have a mistake.
Regardds.
EDIT- the three switches fit where the 5 way is placed, practically no routing is needed.

Wow... you came up with all that since last night?? Impressive! I had noticed your previous post about putting three minis in the slot... that's an intriguing concept!

Alright, that makes sense. I almost never do that, in fact I never even use any pots really, so for me it's just a nuisance there, only cons and no pros. My bypass push/pull should be a great solution though, won't get in my way anymore, and if I want to occasionally use the pot, I can just pull to activate it.

Re: Does this switch position make anyone else crazy?

The pillow gave me a better solution, easier and totally revesible.
1- disconect your blade switch and buy a rotary switch http://www.guitarelectronics.com/product/SWR51/5-Way-Rotary-Guitar-Pickup-Selector-Switch.html
2- put your volume pot where your tone pot is.
3- put the rotary in where yur volume pot is.
4- choose a wiring conectin http://www.guitarelectronics.com/pr...Humbuckers5-Way-Rotary-Switch1-Volume-06.html
or http://www.guitarelectronics.com/pr...Humbuckers5-Way-Rotary-Switch1-Volume-05.html

EDIT; there are lots of wiring diagrams, please forgive me for putting " this OR this", just ask Google and it'll give you more ops. If you want more versatility you can use a 6 way rotary switch.

I suggested putting the rotay where your volume is because it's harder, more difficult to move, than a pot. Thus less likely to be moven by mistake.

Instead of dissconecting tha blade switch you can use it as some kind of varitone, where the "bridge" possition is with no cap (sounding as no tone) and caps of different value on the other possitions. You can put an inductor in the mid possition which would sound different by itself as when combined with a cap.

This way all controles are connected and if you don't like it you can always rewire it as it was. No damage done! Just a suggestion, regards.

I agree with the Jazzmaster/Mustang/Jaguar oddities but I do love the option of individually turning each pickup on and off.

Edit: I really don't use the volume or tone knobs on my guitar (the guitar in my Avatar only has a volume knob.) At one time I would try to use my pinky for volume swells but my volume pedal does a pedal job. I haven't gotten into coil splitting & tapping either.

I kept hitting the pickup switch and volume knob on my Strat. I had to move both. In place of the volume control I put a push switch for master series/parallel. It's low enough I don't hit it.

Thanx but I haven't actually used that wiring, or thought of it before, so it may have a flaw.

Re: Does this switch position make anyone else crazy?

Never hit any of my switches by accident, or control knobs either, on any of my guitars. Same thing when I get a used guitar and it has pickup gouges all over it, I don't get it. My picking hand must stay pretty much exactly over the strings at all times.

You just don't flail around wildly like the rest of us. :D
