X-Files Duckbucker
So I noticed that I couldn't find any standard Explorers on any guitar retailer website. Confused, I contacted Gibson's customer service. With the exceptions of the Jason Hook Signature Explorer and the Bill Kelliher "Golden Axe" Explorer, GIBSON HAS DISCONTINUED THE EXPLORER! WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!!!!!!!! They said they may bring it back in the future, but for now there is no room on the assembly line since they brought in so many new 2013 models. :angryfire

Am I the only one that thinks Gibson has lost it's f---ing mind?! :cussing:

Yeah, but they discontinue guitars all the time, only to bring them back years later.
Also, didn't they just release the Government series explorers as well?

Re: Does This Upset Anyone Else? Explorer Fans, UNITE!

I like explorers a lot...but I am big time against the Gibson company these days, and I truly wouldn't care if Gibson discontinued everything. I'm not gonna buy a new Gibson anything. At this particular point in their history, they are a terrible company. They treat their employees like crap. They break environmental laws and ethics codes by illegally buying wood from protected national forests at a time of civil war. They cheat on their taxes and duties and then try to get people all mad at the government for doing something about it. They send their quality down the tubes, while simultaneously jacking up their prices to unfathomable levels. They use their "Made in the U.S.A." and "legendary" status as selling points, yet they don't live up to the meaning of those terms. Be glad that you can only get them used; they will be better quality and cheaper, and you won't be giving money to the company itself.

Well nobody ever said that Gibson was a smart company.

Re: Does This Upset Anyone Else? Explorer Fans, UNITE!

Hopefully they'll put the Explorer IP up for sale and Jackson will buy it :D

They're learning from PRS. If PRS isn't selling enough of a particular model, like the Custom 22, they discontinue them- when Paul is asked why they are discontinued, his response is " you people weren't buying them". Then after a while, once demand starts building back up, they put it back into production.

Les Paul are their focus now. I remember for years there were only 4 Les Paul- the Studio, Standard, Custom, and 59 Reissue. Now it's impossible to count, they must have over 20 Les Paul models- in my opinion it's to reclaim market share that went to PRS once they released the SC 58 and re released the SC245, both their takes on a Les Paul

F***ing ret*rded.

Re: Does This Upset Anyone Else? Explorer Fans, UNITE!

I was never Gibson fan. But I always loved Explorers. IMO their best design. I think they are very stupid to discontinue it. But I dont care. I wpuld get an ESP or Hammer or something.

It could be all about sales...when they bring it back.

Anyone remember when the big news with the Beatles was that Paul was dead? A totally fabricated story but doubled the sales of every album recorded, etc.

Re: Does This Upset Anyone Else? Explorer Fans, UNITE!

It's just business.

Right now, Gibson wants to put the new lines into retail stores. In a few months time, there will be the production capacity for another run of whatever shape that is not being manufactured this month.

The Firebird comes and goes. Again, this is because we are not buying enough of them.

Discontinuing the Explorer.

Nuatz.

Of course it'll be back.

Re: Does This Upset Anyone Else? Explorer Fans, UNITE!

This stinks. My fav model actually! Kinda ironic.. I asked a few months ago if they were discontinuing the V cuz MF or someplace was selling them on closeout and everyone bashed me like that would never happen.. Guess I was close.. my local GC has a black explorer in stock.. wish I had the smack to snag it..

Re: Does This Upset Anyone Else? Explorer Fans, UNITE!

Been discontinued from the lineup many times before and then been back in many differant configurations. Stick around it will be back. In the meantime, look around. Dean has a couple really cool looking versions in it's 2013 lineup. 6 on a side available too for the V headstock h8ters!

Re: Does This Upset Anyone Else? Explorer Fans, UNITE!

I will say this, I do not care about anything Gibson ever had to offer with the exception of the Explorer, IMHO one of the most iconic guitar of the more aggressive genres and at the same time, an all-around classic.
Plus it looks so GOOD.

But, if I ever had a chance to buy an Explorer (they're even more rare in Greece) I SERIOUSLY doubt it'd be a Gibson. A Hamer? In a heartbeat. A good Kelly? Not an Explorer but it'd do. a Dean, not my cup of tea but still wouldn't kick out of bed.
Extra points for one with a Floyd, that big-@ssed body just begs for it!!!

Re: Does This Upset Anyone Else? Explorer Fans, UNITE!

It doesn't bother me. I already own one Explorer, and they can be found on the used market for a dime a dozen if I ever want another one. No biggie.

Re: Does This Upset Anyone Else? Explorer Fans, UNITE!

I was a little ticked at this as well - I was just considering adding an Explorer to my collection, it's iconic and one of the only 'radical' guitar shapes I really really like. Plenty of my favorite guitarists either play an Explorer or have played an Explorer. I was thinking about grabbing the Thunderhorse Explorer used, but I'd also like one with a natural finish.
