Does your Guitar influence your style?

Does the model of guitar, influence your playing style? I've noticed when I play my Strat I tend to want to play blusier stuff, my Tele immediately wants pedal steel bends and if I pick up a Jackson/Ibanez SuperStrat I want to start shredding. I was wondering if anyone else had similar experiences with their instruments. Also does it feel funny to shred on something like a Gretsch or play country on an Explorer etc?

I'm with ya' on this one- but how much is it physical, and how much does the mental have to do with this also?
I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks about this stuff!

I'm not sure if it is mental or not, maybe it's the tone that affects us.

Re: Does your Guitar influence your style?

Yeah, big time.

When I play one of my RW boarded strat, I immediatly want to start belting out SRV style blues (not SRV ripoff blues) and bluesy rock

when I play one of my maple boarded strats, it comes out either poppy rock kind of stuff, or Slowhand style blues.

When I play my semi-hollow, I start playing chicago style blues

when I play my OM style acoustic, I start playing my singer/songwriter type songs.

dunno what it is, I guess it's just that we have a preset mind of what this specific guitar is supposed to be used for, and we use it for that.

That's what I was talking about!

Re: Does your Guitar influence your style?

for me, no, not at all- i've realized that i sound like 'me' no matter what guitar i play, so i guess that is the reason i never owned many guitars. i pick guitars by comfort, sound and feel, not by what kind of music it inspires me to play. i think, as my needs get more refined, I am always refining my taste in guitars.

Re: Does your Guitar influence your style?

Yeah, for sure. I play more mindless wank on my shredder guitar, more Freddie King-like on a semihollow, more Meters-y and country on my tele, and more Hendrix/SRV on my strat.

Re: Does your Guitar influence your style?

When you strap on a Strat, are you compelled to play Buddy Holly or Jimi Hendrix?

Good point. Although IMHO Jimi's tone is more recognizable as being a Strat than Buddy's. I think certain players are more identified by tone than others.

Re: Does your Guitar influence your style?

No...I don't really attach a particular style to any particular guitar.

Re: Does your Guitar influence your style?

For me, some guitars just enhance the tone of a style more than others, but I seriously doubt I sound any different on different guitars.

although I do only find myself playing metalcore on my guitar...but that's just me, nothing against anything else, haha or because of my guitar.

Re: Does your Guitar influence your style?

I was just discussing this the other day. 90% of my guitar collection is split between Gibson and Jackson.
With the Jacksons I get more prone to shred and play for speed.
The Gibsons (particularly the Pauls) I'm more prone to "dig in" and ride the groove. Ofcourse the tonal qualities of the Jacksons are hot rodded with various Dimarzio/Duncan configs so yes the tonality enters into it as well.
If I need cleaner tones it's all about the Gibsons.
I find when I play acoustic I get in the mood to play electric again :laugh2:
I mean in practical terms you do walk differently in dress shoes than you do running shoes. Guitars can pretty much be the same way I suppose. At least it is for me.

Re: Does your Guitar influence your style?

the extent to which i change from the strat to the gibson is very slight. i tend to play more clean stuff on my strat than on the gibson, but other than that its very similar. when i get my new guitar it will have a floyd or similar trem, so ill play it slightly differently of course.

Re: Does your Guitar influence your style?

I think the sound of the guitar (and the amp) compel me more to play certain things than the type or feel of the guitar does.

Re: Does your Guitar influence your style?

its a mental thing, when I had my tele I would always be playing blues or jangly chords, when I had my steinberger I would play shreddy/heavy stuff, and with
my parker I tend to play satriani/vai/johnson lead stuff. I could definately see
how more guitars= more tones and styles ....or better yet just get a variax.
