Does your Guitar influence your style?

Re: Does your Guitar influence your style?

Yes it does. And I think its all in the head. But there ain't nothin' I can do about it.
Also the sound has a huge part in it.
The difference I play between using a vox ac30 and using a mesa mark IV is completely different.

I'm not sure if it is mental or not, maybe it's the tone that affects us.
definetly has a lot to do with the tone of a given guitar.

almost most people that look at a super strat and pick it up are a lot of times gonna at least atempt to do a little shredding...

Rock On :headbang:

I don't really attach a particular style to any particular guitar.

Nor do I, but I deffinately know I respond differenetly on different guitars.

It's one of the reasons I'll probably never buy a variax...

Re: Does your Guitar influence your style?

For Sure.

I've been sort of frustrated lately because I want to jump into shredding, but my single-coil loaded Strat is giving me nothing but thin tinny blues tones.

Re: Does your Guitar influence your style?

My current guitar is a strat it's my first strat, it just seems to beg for bluesy riffs. If I had my Explorer back or Hamer. The Expl and Hamer special would both ask for harder rockin tunes.

Your guitar can definitely affect your playing. But even when my strat is cranked through the amp it sounds so lively and wants to make EVH harmonics and riffs.

So, I think it's a combo of guitar and amp, but the guitar is the larger factoid in the equation.

Yes and no for me. My Mockingbird has generally been type-cast into playing primarily heavier music, while my Telecaster is only pulled out for some poppy rhythms and clean tones. But, my LP, HWY1, and strat clone are all used for different things… the LP being the most versatile. I can play anything on the LP. The tones of the “type-cast” guitars are set up to do what they do best… unfortunately, that’s also the reason why they don’t do much else well.

Re: Does your Guitar influence your style?

My point of view is little bit truncated as I am used to play on only 2 guitars: a Les paul and a Les paul.

But from this experience i can tell that the sound is really important in the orientation of what I feel like playing.

I mean, if I am just playing freely over the neck, I will play slightly differently depending on the pickup config, splitted (more funky, jazzy), humbucker (rather bluesy, rock) or mix (chords progressions).

I guess, as you feel that your instrument will give a certain type of sounds, you are trying to make the best out of it.

Re: Does your Guitar influence your style?

The sound I'm hearing influences me the most, so it can be any and everything in my signal chain.

BTW, am I the only one thrown off by freshleystjohn's avatar? I thought for a second there that Sid had checked in again.

Yes it does. That why, in my opinion, it's nice to have more guitars.

+1..... But what happens with me is that I find the groove of the guitar /amp combo and lock into there, so it´s far from something that bothers me... Picking up guitars I´d otherwise never play has written whole songs ;)

Re: Does your Guitar influence your style?

I use a telecaster for playing shred/metallica/ and Van Halen.

And remember, I have a platinum pro in my arsenal.

Nuff said on this subject.

Re: Does your Guitar influence your style?

I've kinda stopped dabbling with guitars for other styles. After owning a lot of everything, I've just narrowed it down to LP, Strat, Tele, McCarty, and maybe a superstrat. Those guitars cover everything I want to get out of an electric guitar, so I use the right guitar for the right sound. I know I play differently on all of them, and even have them with different string gauges and tunings.

Now, it's not about 'buying more', it's just about using learning the nuances of all the guitars I already have. Amps dictate even more of the overall sound, so I like to own several of them too. The same guitar can sound drastically different on amps of various styles.

Re: Does your Guitar influence your style?

Yes, IMHO, the sound of the guitar does.
You're not gonna see someone (at least not me) plug an S/S tell into a recto, switch to channel 3 on 'modern' crank the gain and play Lamb of God type ****, now are you? I think not!
and you're not gonna see someone play country on a Jackson

That's what I was talking about!

Yep, +1 to that beandip comment!

I can't play rock and roll with a standard strat. I pick it up and want to play some blues or some funk. With my humbucker equipped Epi, it's jazz and fusion (the PRS Vintage Bass in there rocks for it). My P90 equipped Gibby is my rock and roll machine. I see it and it inspires me to play my pop/rock.

The look is just part of what inspires you to play a particular genre or two. To me, I have it in my head what pickups I want for what duty. P90s are my favorite do-it-all type pups, but I know I won't get those really thick jazz tones or quite get that single coil esque funky or bluesy tone.

Re: Does your Guitar influence your style?

My Strat makes me want to play Maiden, but aside from playing acoustic stuff on my acoustic, I am influenced very little by what guitar I play.

Re: Does your Guitar influence your style?

No, it doesn't really matter for me..I can even play acoustic, children songs on my guitar, even though it is a mockingbird. Of course it is unplugged though, but still, just an example that it doesn't matter to all people :laugh2:

Re: Does your Guitar influence your style?

Well..I play almost everything on my RG..even Jazz lol!

But I think a real Jazz-guitar would inspired me in a different way.
When I got a Strat I want to play the blues all the time.

But good guitarist can play everything on any guitar..it´s all in your hands.

Re: Does your Guitar influence your style?

If you're talking about the guitars I own, for the most part, no. The guitars I have are all relatively similar. The Les Pauls, the Olympic, the Tele are all fixed bridge, relatively hot output guitars. I did change how I played on my old Jag and Jazzmaster, just because the strings would pop out of the saddles if I played too hard. Now that I think about it, I used to baby my LP with a Bigsby, just because I hated having to change strings. :)
