Doing my first nitro refinish, pretty fun so far

I figured my MIM Fender 60's classic players sunburst strat was a good first subject.

I certainly don't want to experiment on a USA Fender or anything to pricey, but at the same time, given how much work it takes and the cost of supplies, I'm not going to do it on a $100 squier or something, because if it turns out well, then it will still be a crap $100 ebay guitar, make sense ?

Figured as well if I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it "right" That means stripping it down to the wood and nitro all the way.

I've heard you can spray nitro over poly well enough, but again, given the cost of reranch spray cans, why spend good money to respray a poly finish.

So the poly had to go. Tried sanding to start with and that was so bad it was almost funny. You sand and sand and sand and get nowehre, get covered in dust etc. Not fun.

Next tried stripper. Didn't do anything really. Fender poly is near indestructable, plus that stripper was a total mess. No go again

So over to Lowes for a heat gun and did that ever do the trick. It was actually pretty fun sitting out on the patio with the heat gun, relaxing and watching the poly all peel up and crack off. Took about 2 hours maybe and was a breeze. I've heard people say its hard work but I've got to say in my case it was pretty easy.

Then a bit of touch up sanding etc to get a nice clean and fresh body. (maybe should of just bought one from USAGC huh lol)

I'm skipping the grain seller as I don't think the alder needs it that badly, and did the sand n seal coats and finished those with the 600 grit.

Very nice and smooth and I dare say I'd be happy with it like that, but alas, way too much paint on hand so I press on

I used the reranch primer today and need to do another coat tommorow, should be a very nice white matte finish. Again, looks pretty cool just like that

I'm going for the color on color concept, with a sonic blue coat overcoated with shell pink. Crazy colors I know, but hey, again, if I'm doing the work, why do a oly white or something I could easily buy.

Only shell pink strats I've seen are Custom Shop and $4199 so not really an option.

I'm not normally a fan of the color on color but I think that the sonic blue looks awesome coming through in the worn area's like the forearm cut for some reason. Fiesta red under white wouldn't be bad either though for what its worth (maybe next project lol)

End goal is going to be a very heavy relic look, dirty, greasy, grimey, smokey, beat to hell, hard living, hard drinking, hard woman loving, pink guitar around.

Really darn tinted neck, worn on the back, very dark rosewood board, mint green pickguard, CS69 pups and a nice old vintage leather strap thats seen better days that used to belong to a relative.

Its really all about the contrast between such a pretty and "girlie" color like pink, but having it so rough looking.

Instead of spending its time at tea parties I want it to have spent 40 years in a dive bar getting drunk at 11am LOL

So thats the inspiration, keep your fingers crossed

You're doing it right -- she's gonna be sweet!

Nice upside to going for a very vintage look/color is that based upon the few true vintage strats I've been lucky enough to get to play, the finish really wasn't all that perfect and Fender seemed to crank out some rush jobs.

If I'm lucky me trying to be painstakingly careful is going to match an old factory working trying to get one last guitar done at 4:30 before a holiday weekend LOL

The modern asethtic of finishers seems to be along the lines of the custom carshow paint jobs with a true mirror surface and seeminly endless depth, or the ever popular "wet look". Thats the last thing I'm going for, I want a nice flat color with a just touch of gloss still, since afterall, even old guitars do have some sheen.

Maybe thats where the whole "relic" thing came from. Someone had a run and instead of trying to sand it out and respary they just though "hey, I'll just hit this run with a screwdriver and save myself some time and say its supposed to look like that" LOL

Re: Doing my first nitro refinish, pretty fun so far

I just saw a Olympic White under and Fiesta Red over Custom Shop 60's heavy relic on ebay...

Now I have massive GAS!

and i just sold my strat!

can't wait for pictures and great progress though! and more GAS!

Sounds like a great project, LFB. I'm sure we'd all like to see pics of the progress.

I don't know quite how many oversprays like that there really where ( I know that Fender didn't waste anything and did in fact respray poorly done finishs, or simply respray existing stock to meet different color demands) but it certainly adds a cool visual look to the guitars doesn't it ?

Nothing wrong with just one color, or one color worn down to the wood, but if a nice complentary color peeking through just really adds some flare.

How hard it will be to wear down the clearcoat and top coat of paint to reveal the second color is going to be the real question.

Being nitro it should be doable though, poly I think would be impossible as its just too tough.

I'm thinking of actually rigging up some leather or similar material and using that on a power drill to authentically speed up the wear process in a more natural manner than simply sanding.

I'm not going to use much clearcoat over the sonic blue, so it will be quite easy to sand through to the primer or wood if I'm not careful so I'll no doubt be sweating bullets during that aspect.

On the upside, at least my first sonic blue coat will serve as a nice practice run so I should be able to do the shell pink better

Re: Doing my first nitro refinish, pretty fun so far

So how thick was the poly on the CP? I had read that it was supposed to be thinner than their regular poly finish?

Re: Doing my first nitro refinish, pretty fun so far

It wasn't what I'd call a "thin skin" by any means, but I would agree that its not quite as thick as some guitars I've seen where you can easily tell that its got like 1/16" of poly on there

I think the thinness may of been why it came up so easily compared to what some reason on other guitars.

I'll be really curious to see if I hear a difference in tone with the nitro, since its the same body. I really didn't do the nitro for the supposed tonal improvement but more so just for the relic potential, but I won't be complaining if it helps

Re: Doing my first nitro refinish, pretty fun so far

dude...i cannot believe you are not posting pics of the process...unless of course im just not seeing them from work, lol
