I put the stock Mesa tubes back in this afternoon. Overall, much better than I remembered. It's amazing how long it took to completely figure out the EQ on the Mesa equipment. It's nothing like old Marshalls or Fenders really. But, I'm impressed with the stock (Sovteks I believe) 6L6 for right now.

The EQ is definitely more responsive and smoother with 6L6s. The midrange control is definitely setup for use with 6L6. The frequency it adjusts is a bit off for EL34s.

Todd sent me an e-mail today suggesting Groove Tube's 6L6 GE, at $90 a pair... ouch. Besides those, the JJ's were #2.

I've tried E.H. 6l6's and also GT el34's and E.H. El34's in my Mesa 2:100/Recto-Pre(Mesa SP12ax-7 1st position) and after a while I went back to the stock(new ones) Mesa 6l6's. It wasn't until I tried the others that I realized I liked the sound and responce better in the stock Mesa tubes.

I have to agree with you on the Eq-ing. I've had this set up for a little over a year and I finally figured out how to work the dials. It's very different from Marshall and has so much to offer. But, it does take a while to fully learn.

Try calling Boogie and get some 5881's if they still have them. I used them whan I played through a Tremoverb and they have a real sweet bluesy tone......Joe :)
