Donner, Mooer etc. pedals...yay or nay?

Need to pick up a couple of pedals that will be used ultra sparingly....chorus, phaser...univibe, that sort of thing.

I don't want to spend a ton of money, need decent sound and a measure of reliability.

Thanks

Re: Donner, Mooer etc. pedals...yay or nay?

I have the Mooer chorus. In my opinion, it is very meh. I also have the Mooer little echo pedal. It, too, is very meh. Lesson learned. :)

Re: Donner, Mooer etc. pedals...yay or nay?

I am with Ben. I have had two Mooer pedals. if cost is more important than sound, go right ahead. But, IMO, you are better off saving awhile longer for something worthwhile to own.

I have dubbed them MEHer.

EDIT I also find build quality less than desirable. switches, pots.

Which Chorus and Echo have you guys had experience with? I thought the Boss CE knockoff and DM knockoff were supposed to be decent? Same with the orange phaser and Electric Lady Flanger.

That being said, you should be able to scour Craigslist to get Boss/MXR/EHx stuff at a decent price. Also, good luck on the UniVibe, unless its a real one (Old Dunlop, Foxrox, Deja Vibe, Mojo Vibe, Voodoo Lab, Drybell, Earthquaker or new Korg) they really leave something to be desired. Doing the "univibe" mod on a phaser is fun to flip a switch, but pales in comparison to a real lamp/photocell circuit.

Re: Donner, Mooer etc. pedals...yay or nay?

the mooer tube screamer thing sounded like a tube screamer and the rat thing was ok too, but i couldn't find a useable sound with the reverb pedal.

Re: Donner, Mooer etc. pedals...yay or nay?

If you're rarely going to use the thing, I'd say either go cheap and don't let "meh" get you down or go with a multi effect like the Zoom MultiStomp to cover them all.

Re: Donner, Mooer etc. pedals...yay or nay?

The chorus ensemble is ok not as wide as I thought it would be. The RAT clone sounds awesome to my ears but mine the footswitch started playing up almost immediately.

Re: Donner, Mooer etc. pedals...yay or nay?

I personally like Mooers. I think of all the Asian clone companies, they are the best. I have a Blues Crab (Bluesbreaker), Flex Boost (AC booster), Hustle Drive (OCD), and the Trellicopter (Demeter Tremulator). I love all of them for different things. I'm planning on getting the Ana Echo (DM-2) and maybe the Green Mile (Tubescreamer). I've heard bad things about the other delay pedals and the reverb pedal.

I'm also planning on getting a Mooer Mod Factory to do pretty much exactly what you are talking about. I don't have much call for a UniVibe or phaser or flanger, but every once in a while, I do need one of them; which makes the Mod Factory perfect. At $88 bucks it's not hard on the wallet, and with the small foot print, it doesn't take much pedal board real estate.

Mooer are too expensive for what they are. Like Mooer, Donner and Joyo are hit-and-miss in terms of quality (although I've had no trouble with any of them for moderate use), but they cost less than half as much.

Re: Donner, Mooer etc. pedals...yay or nay?

Look into Xvive pedals. They are minis like Donner and Mooer, but their design team is formed of Pigtronix alumni, their lead designer worked with Electroharmonix in the late 70s. To my ears they are a definite large step above anything that mooer produces. Other people at the moment seem to be vibing with them, I've seen a few professional guys with xvive on their boards, just for those temporary effects that get use a few times a set.

Most of them that I've tried have some fairly unique features as far as that kind of pedal is concerned, for example on the chorus pedal, theres a knob for blend between vibrato and chorus sound, or their phaser pedal featuring a feedback knob, something not normally found on budget pedals.

What ultimately saved me the most money on mod and delay pedals was springing for a used Boss ME-70 for $100. For the price of 1 Mooer or 2 Donners, I now have a million FX. It doesn't sound canned as long as I don't use the high gain amp models or reverb. I don't use it much for OD, just the kind of stuff you're talking about, plus wah, delay and other pedal effects.

If I feel the need for an octave pedal, trem, whammy, delay, wah, EQ, etc. I have reasonable facsimiles of those. I never use patches, just use it as a collection of extremely flexible stomp boxes. I still use independent distortion/fuzz/overdrive, though.

I have bad luck with multis and hate to program....I am a dinosaur...like knobs that you cvan turn on the fly.

Thanks for the video...very helpful.
BBE stuff Mr Bungalow!?
:D
And hi!

Are you referring to the Soul Vibe, Neils? and Hi to you too. :)

Re: Donner, Mooer etc. pedals...yay or nay?

The Boss ME-50 has all the stuff you need, without amp sims, if a multi unit is a possibility. It's so easy to program, and you can get about any combination of effects you like.
