Double fat Strat.

Hey guys looking for some suggestions here. I'm putting together a double fat strat. I am probably going to stick a PGN in the neck but not sure what to go with in the bridge. I want this for blues/rock type music. What is your favourite buckers for a strat

Re: Double fat Strat.

I assuming this is a alder strat right? Since you're going with a PGn for the neck, I say go with a Pearly Gates Plus in the bridge for a rock/blues. Go try a Lone Star strat to get a taste of the PG+. If that ain't cool you can try a '59 or one of the customs if you don't mind a medium output pup.

I've had a JB and two Customs that were great in a HH strat.

Re: Double fat Strat.

Pearly Gates is A2...my favorite blues / rock and even metal pickup is the CustomCustom which is also A2...might be a good match.

Re: Double fat Strat.

I got a PG+ in a LP and it's a really great pickup. I should look at another one of those. I've also got a tremspaced JB, maybe I should stick an A2 in it and see what's it is like.

Re: Double fat Strat.

I find a PG in the bridge position too bright but perfect in the neck position. I use a Alnico II Pro and I like it a lot, but a '59 would do fine if you want more bass and don't mind the loss of mids. Either way, both the A2P & the 59 will give you great cleans and sound great with Overdrive for Blues/Rock/Hard Rock.

Re: Double fat Strat.

I would go ahead with the PGn in the neck position. It's my favorite neck humbucker and it sounds great in a Strat. I think the alnico 5 PG+ is going to be a little to bright and thin in the mids - it's designed to pair with bright Fender Strat single coil pickups, not another humbucker.

Personally, I like the PGb. It's alnico 2 like the PGn. These were designed for Billy Gibbons but he uses nickel covers on his pickups and that warms them up.

I'd go with a pair of PG's and if they sound to bright to you without covers (they don't to me!)
put some nickel covers on to warm them up.

A PGn and Custom Custom is also a very good combo and I guarantee that the CC will not be to bright.

Re: Double fat Strat.

I just put a Custom Custom in a Squier strat and it's great fun. If this had been the first pickup I heard from Duncan I'd probably have put one in every guitar I own!
Dunno how it'll do for blues though, I'm playing rock and metal on it.

Now I'm quite the opposite. A2P in neck and PGb in bridge. With A2 magnets they're not too bright. I find I can get Tele sounds, Mike Bloomfield, Albert Collins, Robben Ford and those kinds of things out of the PGb. An Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton today...

Point it the PGb with an ALnico 2 Magnet is a good call. IT's got the higher gain you want for those sounds, and if you put it together with the tamer ALnico2Pro, the sum of their sounds is perfect.

BUT the only way to effectively use the PGb is to add a treble knob so you can dial it down to a good level.at 10 It really does get sharp. Which I can dig.

Re: Double fat Strat.

Hey Huntermb, are you going to use 250k pots or 500k for both pups? If you wanna try the A2 JB go for it. Nothing wrong with testing out pups with different mags.

Lew, is right when he says that PG+ will be a little brigther and have thinner mids in a strat. IMO, that can be taken care of with a 250k and your amp. ;)

Re: Double fat Strat.

I honestly hadn't thought about the pots yet, was probably going to try both and see what worked. I guess this might be a good platform for doing some testing and playing...:D Any excuse to play around with some pickups is a good one for sure.
Just out of curiousity has anyone here ever tried a 490R/498T set in a strat?

Re: Double fat Strat.

Have heard that the A2 Gibby pickups excel in a Strat. surely worth a try.

Cant tell too much about a Neck pup in a strat, but i think a PhatCat could be worth a try, too.
I had 10+ pup in the Bridge slot of my alder strat (hardtail).

The best contenders were a Custom8, a JB (also great as JB8), a Demon (with a pole screw mod - all hex for the bass strings), a plain 59 and a Brobucker. The A2 pickups didnt feel right for me, they suffered on the typical twangy, stingy strat sound i like so much. Also with all contenders i got a great parallel sound (best was the stock JB) to mimic the in-between sound of a strat (did i mention i like Knopflers strat sound).
