I think it’s a bit too hispstery for me but I don’t know since I’ve never heard one.

Mojo makes a lot of other foils: https://www.mojopickups.co.uk/product-category/pickups/gold-foil/

What say you, wise peeps of SDUGF?

Does SD do foils?

They're pretty yuge, bigger than a WR. Very cool looking.

Waterslide offer them on their offset (Jazzmaster) model.

Sound pretty good to me.

That clip sounds great;

though- :/ I'm certain there is some really nice high-end amps/pedals in the setup; that contributes to what we are hearing.

It would be best, to hear the pickup A/B'd with a standard (i.e. the '59,) you get my point! :)

Too bad about the wierd size too- doesn't look like they would fit anything without major modification/routing.

One of my favorite pickups is the Roadhouse Pickups "Kingston"/Supro reissue "Gold foil" which is based on the old Supro "Cleartone" pickup.

That being said, I still think that there is way too much hype and a good bit of misinformation about "gold foil" pickups... There is no one singular traditional gold foil pickup design. They were produced by different companies using different constructions, and to add to the confusion it seems a lot of modern pickup winders are making "gold foil" pickups that don't follow any of the traditional designs or may just be a p90/humbucker/fender single coil with gold foil on top for looks.

^^ Mm, I'd imagine cheaper repros are probably normal pups in a gold foil housing. Making a proper replica with the right alloy magnet, covers/baseplates etc. would be costly, just for the r&d. The old ferrite type mags used in the 60s are quite different from modern ceramic ones, pups sound warmer and less in-your-face.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing as I was listening – dude's probably not plugging into a 10w ss amp, ha.

Looking at the specs – ferrite (ceramic) magnet, 44awg, generous winds – they share some similarities to some old British pups from the 60s. This may explain the throaty/warm tone.

Yes, there would be a market for a cover like that, if not the whole design of the pickup. I think it is like most guitarists and lipstick pickups- they like the look, but the sound isn't the best. I'd think a more conventional pickup underneath would do better.

it has its own thing, though :)

I wonder if these will feedback/ go microphonic under high gain/ high volume applications.

My Epi Wildkat came with covererd P90s, where the cover acted like some kind of "bell" hovering over the pickup, with no dampening. It made for a complex, beautiful clean sound; but would squeal like a pig in heat once you turned on the distortion. I opened the pickups and added silicone from a tube) ) :

:) I think these pickups are nice.
Maybe just one tho, as a bridge or neck pickup?
