DOUBLE SCREW COIL humbucker, with metal cover, without going full custom?

Can you get a DOUBLE SCREW COIL humbucker, with METAL COVER, (with 12 holes.. ) without going full custom?

I'm aware of the AH1, but if you want a standard wind, like a '59, or a Custom5, could you get it with two screw coils, and the metal cover, without ordering an AH1?

Would that be a "shop-floor custom" perhaps?

I've wondered this about the Screamin' Demon also, - you can get it with a cover, but it covers the allen screws. Would the AH1 cover fit, and leave holes for all the screws?

On a related note, does a metal cover provide increased shielding on modern Duncans? Or is it unnecessary? Between the humbuckers hum-cancelling nature and.. - Do they shield them under the cover somehow? - I think they do on "single-coil-sized-humbuckers," what about full sized humbuckers?

They do seem pretty quiet, from what I've heard.

In some cases I'd like to get metal covers anyway for aesthetic reasons.

If you're going to cover it, why the need for 12 screws?

Re: DOUBLE SCREW COIL humbucker, with metal cover, without going full custom?

Thanks guys. -That covers covers.. It would cover a Screamin' Demon, and leave all the holes.

- Now what about getting the double screw coil pickups in the first place?
Do you have to order an AH1, or can they just put two '59 screw coils together, &/or two Custom5 screw coils together? etc.

If so, I don't guess it would be too much extra for them to go ahead, and put AH1 covers on it..

For double screw your going to have to order a custom shop pickup... which at that point might as well just go all the way and spec it out completely with MJ

Well you can get the AH1 any way you want, but It's $160 EACH.. - I think that's completely FAIR for custom work, but it's still a bit of a stretch for me, right now.

I like the sound of the standard winds I mentioned, and I may well opt to just get the standard model. - They're very nice.

I'm still curious if two screw coils of a '59 would qualify as a "shop-floor-custom?" An up-charge would be expected, but maybe less than paying to have a pickup built from the ground up.. ?

No it does NOT qualify as shop floor custom hence why i suggested just getting a custom shop pickup. All CS humbuckers start at 160 bucks so there is no need to use the AH1 as the basis if you get a CS pickup just start from the ground up.

If you are really really hard up for cash just buy 2 used 59's for 40 to 50 bucks and swap the coils over yourself. All the info you need is in the 59/c hybrid thread thats rolling around here.

Re: DOUBLE SCREW COIL humbucker, with metal cover, without going full custom?

I'd just go with the Demon and put a cover on it. If you don't like the look of any of the screws, they can easily be replaced. It's an awesome pup and you don't need to worry about buying and hybridizing two pups.

OK. --- No real reason NOT to use AH1 as a starting point then.. ;) - That's what it is: two screw coils, with a 12-hole cover, wound to whatever you spec; in this case, basically a '59...
Or you could say you were starting with a '59, and adding the extra screw coil, and the covers... ;)
Yes, I'm building it from scratch, but what I want is two screw coils, wound about like a '59, with an A5 magnet.. So saying one of the above things is just a good way to describe it to them.

That's a thought. I've seen that thread, I can go re-read it. I'm OK to DIY some stuff. Might be fun. :)
That would work for the '59, which I want to put in the neck.
- I want to put a Custom5 in the bridge though, and those are harder to find used. - Two new ones would cost as much as custom shop..

Yes, I've been on the fence about using a '59b vs. a Demon @ the neck position. - I know the Demon is well loved as a neck pickup around here.
I'm a little afraid it might be to hi-mid focused for me, and not enough lows.. - but it could be just the thing. - I'm not opposed to a row of allen screws..

C5's maybe.. but customs are pretty easy to find... the only difference between a custom and C5 is the magnet type. You can get A5 mags for 6 bucks off ebay to make you a C5

Re: DOUBLE SCREW COIL humbucker, with metal cover, without going full custom?

You're gonna pay CS prices for a '59 with two screw coils?!! You're really not going to hear much, if any, difference from a stock '59.

I wouldn't say the Demon is high-mid focused at all. Just not mid-scooped like the '59. It has a very even EQ.

I'm hoping NOT to pay CS prices. I have heard that if it can be made with available parts, they will build it for you, and NOT charge full CS price. I'll call them when I'm closer to ready.

I wouldn't expect it to sound much different at all vs. the stock '59. - it's the adjustability that I want.

On pickups with two rows of screws, I like to raise the poles nearest the neck under the treble strings, and raise the poles nearest the bridge, under the bass strings, or sometimes it's 4 and 2, where I raise the nearer-to-bridge poles under the two bottom strings.

- On the neck p/u, this gives me a full, round, very "neck-like" tone on the high strings, while avoiding mush, and adding back in a little twang, on the low strings.

- It's less critical on the bridge p/u, but still nice. - I raise the nearer-to-neck poles under all the strings, then also raise the nearer-to-bridge poles under the two lowest strings; Avoids ice pick on high strings, adds fullness, (while still having plenty of twang) on low strings.

I think I am used-to, like, want, the mid-scoop of the '59... So if the response of the Demon is flatter, it might not be what I want. - I'm sure I'd like it OK, I just suspect I'd like a '59 MORE... ;)

(I'd like to see a demo of someone playing a Demon in the neck, CLEAN, & semi-clean, maybe compared with a '59.. I've only seen it demo'ed with higher gain..)

Re: DOUBLE SCREW COIL humbucker, with metal cover, without going full custom?

Also, am I correct in thinking the FULL SHRED uses different wire? - It claims to have a lot more treble, less bass on the tone chart..
( 4-4-8 vs. 6-3-8 for the Custom5 & '59..) -and the neck states a higher resonant peak..
( I know, take the tone chart with a grain of salt, but it's supposed to give us SOME kind of a hint, right?)

Because otherwise, it's an A5 magnet, the neck has similar DCr to the '59n, and the bridge has similar DCr to the Custom5, and; TWO ROWS OF SCREWS.
It would be easy to change one or both rows of screws to regular, right? - If I chose to do so. - I might like allen screws just fine.
