Doubleneck Stratocaster (6/12 string)

I'm about to start building my own doubleneck Strat completely from scratch, and I'm at the stage of drawing up the router template for the body. I'm wanting to have the two necks parallel as opposed to the Warmoth style where the 12 string neck would be higher up than the 6 string neck. The way that I've drawn it up means that there would be less body wood to the left hand side of the 6 string neck - is this stilll going to be enough support? There's still going to be wood all the way up the left hand side of it like on a normal strat, except the wood won't be as bulky as ususal.

Here's a rough mockup from MS Paint - it'd be more contoured than this, and this is just a 6 string strat doubled up, but you get the idea:

i've made 2 from scratch myself.... modeled after Warmoths style... the 12 string top neck is 1 1/2 inches farther forward then the bottom 6

Re: Doubleneck Stratocaster (6/12 string)

I think I'd want the necks kind of angled away from each other, so you could pull the 6 up to a better playing position, if that makes sense.

If you are gonna build a double neck anything (6/12, 6/4, 6/6, etc) build it wher ethe necks are NOT perfectly parallel...having the 2 necks getting farther apart towards the nut makes them much more playable IMO...I mean you can do them parallel, and lots of people have over the years but I find the other way more playable...

Re: Doubleneck Stratocaster (6/12 string)

Does that make it any more playable (or maybe less playable)?

The Idea is to be able to switch to the 6 string bridge easier.... The 12 string is slightly forward and when you are reaching down to the 6 string you can get around the 12 string bridge a little easier...

My 2 double neck bodies are still in need of some work before paint... one is a mahogany body and the other is a Basswood one... Basswood is nice and light.... and it was cheap for the wood... $35 or so for that board.. the Mahogany i have routed out for SSS on the 12 string side with no Pickguard.... the 6 string side will have a standard strat pickguard... it looks neat!!! The Basswood one will be humbuckers on both necks sides

^ Those sound really cool - do you have any progress pics?

One thing I've been considering about this guitar is the weight - I could always go about routing the body to remove weight, but then I worry that the guitar will end up really neck heavy. The necks will be English Sycamore (maple) and the body will be Alder/Mahogany/Alder. Hmmm....

ya i have a few older photos, but it's a group shot of all my homemade stuff.. The up close photos of the Double necks i used to have i lost when my old Computer crashed... Digital photos with no back ups suck..

send me a PM with an e-mail address and i'll e-mail the ones i have to you....

i've also been looking ta buying an OLP... I love the OLP double necks because of the price!!!! Not bad double necks for the money

Double neck guitars?? What were you born with, 4 hands???

:laugh2:

Ok, seriously that looks like a cool idea. Good luck with the project!

Re: Doubleneck Stratocaster (6/12 string)

hmm i cant tell from the picture, but I'd definitely use a hard tail bridge for the 12 string

Re: Doubleneck Stratocaster (6/12 string)

^ That's definately what I'll be doing, the 6 string neck will have a Callaham vintage strat bridge with trem and I think I'll go for the Gotoh 12 string hardtail bridge since it's got fully adjustable intonation.

I finished the router template for the body yesterday, so I'll get a pic posted of that ASAP to show the basic outline of what the body will look like. I think it turned out perfect, which is especially cool considering I've only just started to learn how to use a router. Also, with a router planing jig I constructed last week, I've planed down some English Sycamore (8"x28"x1") to 3/4" thickness for making the two necks for this, which turned out looking really nice - hopefully I can get this project finished save for the fretting, hardware and finishing by the time I go back to Uni in 2 weeks.
