DR Dimebag Darrel Strings.

Who uses them? I got a card for 15 bucks from Guitar Center and I was going to go buy a new kind of string. I've read great reviews on them, but I want you guys' opinions.

Re: DR Dimebag Darrel Strings.

I know who doesn't use them... that would be Darrell. Bugs me to no end how companies are still milking his name for everything they can.

I think thats one thing, along with the Dimebucker and Dime wah, that actually existed while he was still alive.

Blame his family, not the company. No company could capitalize off of his name unless they had his estate's permission.

That would be the Abbot estate that is pumping his corpse like a $2 hooker.

*EDIT* Damn you Jolly!

No idea about this set. If you haven't yet done the coated string thing, give that a shot. I've recently fallen in love with Elixir Nanowebs. If you don't like it, you don't like it. But it was eye-opening to me.

Re: DR Dimebag Darrel Strings.

Dudes - strings are (for the most part) strings. There are only like three or four companies in the whole world who make them regardless of the name on them.

Dime used DR strings. These are DR strings. If you dig DR strings, get them. Honestly, I'd only get them if they were the same price or cheaper than whatever I was using.

And as for the 'milking' of Dime - no doubt it is the family approving such things. However, I spent a day in the Dean factory, and pretty much EVERY dime Dean guitar is shown on a bunch of handwritten sheets. The dude wanted all of that stuff made.

And let's be fair - Eddie Van Dooshen has been pimping his own name like a two dollar hooker - and he hasn't done jack of musical interest in almost 20 years. Bigger whore than anyone pimping darryl abbott gear IMO...

Difference here is that the Ed crap seems to be driven by all the wanna-be's that have been fixated on his sound (as well as Ed himself) for the past 30 years, while the Darrell stuff is driven by the fam and the few companies still using his name. In both cases, they're beat to death. It's like the covers of Guitar World magazine...we can only see either of these guys so often before they become cartoonish. Ed hasn't done anything relevant in ages, aside from launching product lines. Darrell's been dead a while now and yet the mag still clings to him like tighty whities.

Re: DR Dimebag Darrel Strings.

To be fair, Dimesheep or not, the Dime line are some wicked bad@$$ axes...

Re: DR Dimebag Darrel Strings.

I never hear anyone whining that Jackson is whoring out Randy Rhoads. And, he only got to play that particular model a few times, before he died.

Maybe Gibson should stop production on the Les Paul, too?

I'm sure Dime's family see it as an honor that so many people loved him so much, and still want to emulate him. These products are a way to keep his memory alive, and they wouldn't exist, if the people closest to them didn't want them to.

Anyhow, I usually hear great things about DR, and I'm sure these would be no different. Give them a try!

Re: DR Dimebag Darrel Strings.

To the original question, IIRC, the livewire set of Dime's DR strings are just his custom gauge set of Hi Beams. They use to be my favorite strings, but they don't seem to last as long as they use to. I've never had any breakage problems others seem to talk about, but they do seem to go dull sounding pretty quickly under regular use.

FWIW, I have really acidic sweat, so YMMV. Good luck!

I love those strings, especially since they started plating the plain strings. They are the ONLY strings that can hold up to my gnarly acid pH sweat.

Re: DR Dimebag Darrel Strings.

If I am not mistaking, the DR Dime Signature string set, is Dime's choices of gauges (there's a couple different gauge sets available in the Dime series), and they were treated from the factory with DR String Life, a product to "coat" your strings with that DR sells in bottles as well. This DR String Life is relabeled LPC Stringlife from Protek Products Inc. in New York.
It does indeed coat your strings when you apply it to them, but I got to say, the coating wears off a lot quicker then the coating used on Elixir strings for example. To keep your strings coated when using String Life, you have to apply it (preferably) after every playing session.
I've never used the Dime signature strings myself, but I do use the String Life on it's own, and since the Dime strings are supposed to be treated with String Life, I thought I'd put my word in too.
