Dr.Z Maz 38 opinions needed

Got a chance to try out a Maz38 Senior (2x12) in a studio session and I must say I kinda liked it. A nice blend of Vox-ish and Fender-y sounds.

I´ve never heard or played one before, and I´d like to hear some comments on the amp before the GAS gets unbearable.

Oh and I think the sound clips on the Dr.Z website sound nothing like the amp really sounds like.. The clips are really thin an kindof cold..

my buddy has one with the z best cab and its a great amp. ive used it on a few gigs where his band and mine were playing and i was feeling lazy and didnt want to haul my crap. sounds best when you can open it up a little, i dont think it sounds great at really low volumes but once its loud enough to get over the drummer the tone is there.

check out buddy whittington in the dvd of john mayall's 70th b-day, thats a maz 38

get it...that's all i can tell you, get it :) I'm paying off a Dr. Z Maz 18 at the moment and it's the most unbelievable amp I've ever played in my life (and I've gotten to play a LOT of great amps) ...you won't regret it, I promise.

I guess I´ll just have to scrape the cash from somewhere.. I mean, those amps aren´t cheap over here. The one I´ve got my eyes on is 1,900€, which is about 2,500$..

But I have to admit it sounded pretty good. I´m not just sure if it was that good if you know what I mean.. I´ve been looking for a VOX-like 2x12 amp for so long this hunt for the perfect amp is driving me crazy.

Have you compared the Maz 18 to the Maz 38? How does the basic sound differ from the other?

Re: Dr.Z Maz 38 opinions needed

the Maz 38 offers a bit more clean headroom, but they're pretty similar (hence the naming scheme). I almost snagged a Maz 38 2x12 combo in January for $1300, but the seller sold it to his son the day I was leaving to go buy it *grumbles*. I'm not complaining though, the Maz 18 is an amazing amp too and I'm glad to have found one that puts me in a situation to pay it off as opposed to having all the money up front.

I've got a Maz 18 Reverb 2x10. Great amp. Good chewy textured cleans and a very musical thick overdrive. I wish there was a bit more gain on tap, but oh well.

The 38 I played through was a 1x12 with a 1x12 extension cabinet. Great sound very similiar, but quite a bit more headroom. What is interesting though is how the Jr. reshaped the Sr. What kind of speakers did it have? I really gotta give Zaite props for building those Z best cabs and speakers (only 10s right now IIRC) great sound and construction.

What kind of speakers did it have?

If I remember correctly it had the Celestion G12H:s in it.

Not a bad choice for the amp, it stayed pretty clean even when opened up quite a bit. But I can imagine it would sound even better with a pair of Blues for example.
