Dr Z route 66?

Okay, as part of my big amp collection shakeup, I'm looking at replacing my Soldano with a Marshall JTM45 head or Bluesbreaker combo. But I noticed that a Dr Z Route 66 head was available on my local auction site. As far as I know this is the only Route 66 i've ever seen in my country.

So, what do you guys know about them? any users? -do they compare favourably with the Marshalls I'm interested in?

Re: Dr Z route 66?

I have tried them twice or so...more like a JTM-45 as oppsosed to a Plexi 50 or 100...VERY LOUD...no matter whatelse you read remember this...THOSE AMPS ARE VERY LOUD...they are rated at 30 watts give or take and it is one of the LOUDEST 30 watts you'll ever stand in front of!

Now that we have that out of the way...I quite liked the tone of them but be warned...I tried them through 2 different cabs...once through a Two Rock open back 2x12 and HATED the tone...no real bottom and just a crappy tone over all...the next time was the exact same head but through both a Dr. Z cab and through a Marshall 4x12...MUCH BETTER, but still VERY loud!

In a nut shell...they break up pretty quick and have that old JTM-45 thick, swirly overdriven goodness but unlike most amps with an early break-up/low headroom the Route 66 just keeps on getting louder as you crank it up!

Als, twist the tone controls all over the place...they only have 2 tone controls but they make a world of difference!

Also, get a handfull of good EF86's and a few nice pairs of KT66's...you'll thank me later!

Re: Dr Z route 66?

particularly cab dependant, eh? -I'm used to that with the soldano. I'll be looking at using V30s personally, so anyone who knows how they match up please chime in...

Re: Dr Z route 66?

That amp (and most Dr. Zs) was designed around the more modern vintage-flavored ceramic celestions like the vintage 30 and the G12H30s. You'll have no trouble with those. Those give it the highest headroom, best bottom end as Christian said and probably a very loud tone also. I must stress that the amp IS EXTREMELY LOUD for 30 watts. Try cranking it up at a club or something, you'll be surprised how much you cant bring it up. But its very different from your typical Marshall or tweed in the way it reacts to things. For example, the volume knob - low breakup, but instead of getting more and more distorted, it just gets louder and louder as you bring it up as Chrisian said before. Tone knobs (treble and bass) bring the amp from very thin to very thick, almost like the control on the tweak fuzz, more like voicing knobs instead of high-end roll offs. Has a super smooth tone though, similar to a Bluesbreaker but with definitely some Vox and 18 watt influence with the inclusion of the EF86. Very simple design, great tone. I got a chance to play it a while ago with multiple guiutars and all volumes (hahaha never will get to do tht again!). I think it sounded best with P-90s and Alnico Vs (I was playing a '54 LP Custom Reissue). Strats and hums sounded good too, but the P-90 really stood out giving the smoothest tone and seemingly endless sustain. Id definitely recomend it...

Re: Dr Z route 66?

It really is a great amp and to be honest the only thing I could even come close to complaining about it the overall volume of the amp...with a Celestion loaded cab it is amazing...

Re: Dr Z route 66?

I had one and sold it. Ultralinear amps do not agree with me. Above poster was right, it went from a whisper to an absolute take no prisoners roar with a twist from 1 to 3. Just nothing in between for me. So, i sold it.

Re: Dr Z route 66?

did anyone mention it was LOUD!!
a friend of mine has one and it sounds great but its the loudest 30w amp ive ever heard
