Drop C tuning tension. Need help!

Re: Drop C tuning tension. Need help!

i always used the 10-52 for drop c but i was thinking maybe the zakk wylde set. they are hybrid with 10's or so on high strings and down to 60 on low e.

well my 10-52 go to standard tuning, so i definitely needed a higher set. 11-54 seems fine. might try 11-56 in the future.

Re: Drop C tuning tension. Need help!

i was told that leaving the 10-52 on my guitar in standard tuning would damage the neck.

I've had 10-52 on for about 6-7 months (obviously strings changed 2-3 times in between) and I can tell you, my guitar is as good as it was out of store, no neck damage.

Re: Drop C tuning tension. Need help!

I was wondering myself sounded kind of fishy. was thinking back to zakk wylde and the fact that he uses a freaking baseball bat for his low E. He's usually tuned to D standard. with his 60 in d standard i was thinkin that should be about same as me in standard with a 52. Idk. food for thought i guess. I switched back to normal ten's but I miss my drop C guitar.

Re: Drop C tuning tension. Need help!

I had to make this guitar a Drop C one, and the next I buy will probs go to Drop B, who knows :P that can wait... a while

Re: Drop C tuning tension. Need help!

understand that one. I have three currently. one standard, one Eb and one was drop c but I have it standard as my backup. May drop it back to Drop C

Sounds like a perfect set for different tuned guitars !
never need to test anything else my friend... great choice!

They're so damn smooth, and springy !! Just wanna see if they last !

Re: Drop C tuning tension. Need help!

You might wanna try an EB 7 string power slinky set. They are 58,48,38,28,18,14,11. Then toss the 48. I believe thats what the Slipknot guys use for drop B, 1/2 step lower, so you should have a little more tension.

Re: Drop C tuning tension. Need help!

I went there looking for them, they didnt have the specific set, and they offered to put together single strings with the same gauges, but i saw EB's and thought i might as well try them!

The Daddario's EXL117 (11-56) are hard to find. None of the local Music stores in my area carried them in stock. I ended up ordering a few sets from an Ebay Music Store. The Ernie Ball Beefy Slinkys are good strings too, I liked those as well but for Drop C I preferred the EXL117's. Order a set online, they are well worth it.

I figured they wouldn't, not sure why :P

More tension i assume ?

Re: Drop C tuning tension. Need help!

I play entirely in C-standard in my main band. I use GHS low Boomers (on a LP). They sound like ass the first week or so, then they even out. Mind you, that only seems to work on the half stack I'm using. THey absolutely blow chunks when it comes to bedroom jamming.

Re: Drop C tuning tension. Need help!

Just restrung my (24.75 scale) Hamer Studio with a set of .012 gauge Blue Steels and tuned it to C#(dropped B). The G string is friggin' TIGHT and hard to bend... the low E is flappy flappy. I have a set of .013 and will use the .056 from that... the D string for a .009 set is .024 and that would be just right for my G string (which is currently too stiff at .026).

So, it turns out I will have a custom set of Blue Steels when I am done. I don't mind buying three packs 'cause they last at least a couple of years and sound great the entire time.

Strings and Beyond has a pretty good selection of single strings for custom sets. I get all of my strings there, they have the best selection and prices. My nearest GC and Sam Ash is an hour drive and it's just not worth it so I mail order.

Re: Drop C tuning tension. Need help!

Well that doesnt sound like my kind of strings ahahah

Well, there's actually a multitude of other factors you should take into consideration:

1: At home, I play through my Line 6 toneport connectoed to my computer, often using headphones. At band rehersals, I play through an Engl Savage 120w and an Orange 4x12 cabinet, cranked. So there's a lot of difference in tone and a noticable change in string-to-string distinction from what I have going at home.

2: Like most (all) strings, these sound absolutely fantastic clean and absolutely **** under heavy distortion during the first week or so. This has been my experience with all strings, regardless of brand or gauge. After a couple of playing hours, they "settle", the cleans no longer as dynamic or glassy, but the trade-off being that the more compressed sound is much more suited to heavy crunch and distortion sounds. As I'm playing thrash-ish metal, that works just fine for me.

3: Pick string gauge according to tuning. As I'm playing a full 2 whole steps dropped, I need something that doesn't flop around too much. Unless I'm mistaken, you said you might be using the strings on a LP (same as me). My standard setup is 11's, which work very well for standard tuning and freakin' awesome for 1-step drops. But since you're going for drop C, my advice would be to try a set of 11's - my weapon of choice remains GHS, but go with whatever brand you feel comfortable with - and then pick the low E string from a set of 12's or 13's.

Sorry if it all sounds a bit overly pedagogic, just trying to cover all the bases here.

Re: Drop C tuning tension. Need help!

I actually use GHS 10-52 for C# standard and I like it alot. I don't like super heavy gauge strings anyway. I used 11s or maybe it was 12s. I like to bend an vibrato alot and they were just too stiff.

I find the more I play (also possibly combined with a lot of heavy lifting) the heavier gauges I need, as they feel floppier the stronger my fingers (tendons?) get. You get strong enough, your vibratos and bends will feel just as natural on a thicker set of strings. But of course, that's all preference anyway.
