Drop-in Mini Strat locking tuners?

Hi guys,

I’m looking at a J. Reynolds Mini Strat for my son and was wondering what locking tuners do you think would drop in without needing to drill?

Thank you

To know for sure, you'd have to measure the holes and spacing of the tuners. But another question- why? What's going on with the tuning? Any tuning issues are usually the nut, not the tuners (most of the time).

Trapezoid tuners suck. They're the very symbol of tuning issues.

If you see trapezoids, you WILL have tuning issues, it will NOT be the nut, and they will never-ever-ever go away until you ditch that junk.

Re: Drop-in Mini Strat locking tuners?

I bought a Squier Mini Strat a billion years ago, and it had tuners like that. The tuning improved when I put mini Grovers on it, but there were still issues. Worked on the nut with assorted tools and abrasive materials. Better, but still not there. Then I went up in string size. I think I ended up with 11’s in standard. That was it. If I were better at nut work, I might have been able to fix it just by doing that.

OP try a higher gauge first then if you still want you can give the universal UMP locking tuners from hipshot a try. As long as they fit in the hole, you're good to go, no more drilling needed.

Well, you can have tuner AND nut issues :D

I followed your advice a couple of years back, put 11s in my mini and didn't have tuning issues since. I still have the original tuners.

Thanks Mincer - this is for my son, I’d like him to be able to focus on playing/learning, rather than tuning every 5 minutes.

Haven’t bought the guitar yet but was wondering on tuner options before I pull the trigger.

Yeah, you'd have to get measurements of what is on there and how big the tuner holes are. I don't know if regular-sized tuners fit or not. But if you are going to replace the tuners, go ahead and replace the nut, too.

Do you recall which Mini Grovers you installed?

I’m looking at Gotoh SD91’s, but they appear to be mounted horizontally versus vertically.

So after doing research, I’m looking for thin barrel locking tuners that mount vertically

Used that Kluson type set of Ghotos on a Les Paul a while back they are solid tuners. I have a set of Shaller style Ghoto lockers on my Strat and all my Grover Jackson era USA Washburns have the Washburn labeled Ghoto lockers that are unique on them. I personally prefer those to any other lockers i have ever used. Rock solid tuning super quick restringing easy to use and have never ever had a failure. Just NEVER use a screwdriver to lock them pull the string through hold tension wind in and let the tuner lock itself stretch the strings to set them and they are rock solid. Those simply are fantastic!!

I’ll say it again. Just put 11s, save yourself some time and money.

Word. A lot of the tuning issues on those little guitars are intonation issues. 9s have so little tension they’re hard to play in tune. The 11s and a proper setup will do better than locking tuners.
