drop-in replacement pickups for Fender Modern Player Tele bass?

I'm looking for suggestions for what might work as drop-in replacement pickups for a Fender Modern Player Tele bass.

Have been seeing some good deals on bodies, but have no idea what I'd put in. I can't tell from pictures what would fit.

fyi: I prefer passive to active.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: drop-in replacement pickups for Fender Modern Player Tele bass?

For the neck position, an EB style humbucker would be the classic choice. DiMarzio Model One or Will Power N pickups would be my preferences. Deep fartiness will be the order of the day. The single main difference between these two pickup models is their polepiece spacing.

IMO, the same Dimarzio pickup in the bridge position would be a mistake. I would go for something eccentric such as the triple coil pickup from an Ibanez Attak bass guitar.

One other pickup that should fit the rout is the Warwick Double J model.

Otherwise, your only real option is to fabricate cover plates in pickguard material so that you can fit conventional bass pickups into the oversized cavities.

Thanks for the warning!

That's probably what I would wind up doing and would only involve the bridge pickup. Since the neck pickup is in the pickguard area, I'd just have to have the pickguard made to fit.

Glad you mentioned the pole piece spacing. Definitely an issue to look into.

Thanks!

A friendly word of advice: we're assuming that you have them set to optimum distances from the strings.

If they're too low they'll be weak sounding and if they're too close the bass will sound muddy.

You know. :)

Thanks for the reminder...

This is strictly in the planning stage at this point.

Is the instrument currently stock? What do you dislike about the stock pickups?

It might be easier to correct for any deficiencies by running your stock pickups through an active EQ system such as the SD/Basslines STC-3p or the STC-2C-BO Blackouts for Bass EQ.

I will likely buy a naked body without pickups. That's why I was asking what would fit.

Thanks.
