drop tuning a baritone guitar?

ok crazy idea if there is thicker strings on a baritone guitar could it be used as/like a bass? i.e. schecter hellcat vi, schecter ultra vi, fender bass vi or a danelectro baritone?

Re: drop tuning a baritone guitar?

Yes. A baritone guitar can be down-tuned into the bass guitar register BUT, with a scale length in the 28-30" range, you should expect string tension and intonation issues.

As pitches go lower, the bridge needs to offer greater range of adjustment in order to set the intonation. This is a known problem on the Squier Bass VI. Staytrem even makes a suitable replacement.

Re: drop tuning a baritone guitar?

now heres a question what string gauge would you suggest? and a minimum sale length? also any good ideas for a cheap one?

Re: drop tuning a baritone guitar?

Given the choice between buying and altering a baritone guitar to function as a substandard bass and simply buying a regular bass guitar, I would spend my own money on a Squier VM Jazz Bass, a Gotoh 201B bridge and American pickups and electronics.

yeah, honestly im just kinda trying to find a more comfortable way to play bass, cuz there is no one in my area who does lessons i cant find a bassist and i feel my hands are a wee bit to small for the 34in scale bass i have. hell one time i tried using a octave pedal and that was just ****e. it also dont help rocksmith offer ''simulated bass''

Re: drop tuning a baritone guitar?

Well a 27" scale inch, like the one that the LTD has is designed more for B tuning. I've played baritones that size and they're fun for sure, especially if you are dead set on a 6 string in that range, but I prefer 7 strings by far (different challenge and you can have the same high end range of a 6 string).

If you're looking to get a 6 string bass, like a Squire Bass VI, then I'd get a Squire Bass VI. There would be quite a few intonation issues and you'd have to have suspension bridge cables for strings if you went with the 27" one. Furthermore, while the sound of the Bass VI is not always appreciated, there's really nothing like it either.

Re: drop tuning a baritone guitar?

yeah that would probably be best, still gonna keep my eyes peeled for somthin though

Now, I have seen examples of duos where the guitarist plays a baritone to make up for the lack of bass in the band, but from what I gather, you're more after a bass range instrument, in which case, might I suggest something like this or this? Both 30" scale length basses, so they're a bit smaller than a standard bass. Or if you can pop on down to a guitar store sometime, I'd recommend trying a Jazz Bass or two. Those have super skinny necks, much more so than a P-bass neck. In fact, even with my big hands, I still prefer the feel of a Jazz Bass neck. Which is weird, because I typically like big baseball bat necks.

Re: drop tuning a baritone guitar?

Get this NOW!!!!!

I bought a Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar with the 30" short scale neck, and I liked it so much I got another one for my niece. And right now, the price is so low they're practically giving them away! Nice find, Johnny the Kid.

With regards to the OP, bad idea. I understand wanting to have a shorter scale instrument, but with the availability of 30" basses of good quality at low prices, there is literally no advantage to trying to convert a 28 1/2" 6-string baritone guitar designed for thinner strings into a short scale bass.

I have my moments.

I got one of those Broncos for my sister when she was learning bass for all of about 5 minutes. Ended up selling it, but still pretty good for the price. I like the Single Coil P pickups as opposed to the split coil ones.

Re: drop tuning a baritone guitar?

ok might get the jaguar but may also get a dean evo xm bass both are like super cheap an can easily be upgraded to the controls i want thanks for all the helps guys

Re: drop tuning a baritone guitar?

You might get the jaguar? If you didn't already get it, you are going to pay $50 more for it than if you had gotten it when it was first linked. $179 is still a good price for the quality of guitar, but it isn't the insane deal it was when it was $129. If you were looking for "super cheap" and missed this deal, you blew it.

Hopefully you got in under the wire.

to be honest the jaguar didnt ''suit my asthetic'' im sure its a good bass but i dont have $$ as of right now i do research so i know what to get rather than asking as i buy i like to walk into a purchase with most if not all questions answered and honestly a b-stock verson of the dean xm can go for 179 as well. end of the day im not a fan of fender shapes.
