DS-1 vs. DS-1: Initial Impressions

Re: DS-1 vs. DS-1: Initial Impressions

well...maybe not exactly alike, but you can get very close. although i do remember that i made them sound pretty much identical. but that's not the point, i just wanted to suggest it as a better option, it is more flexible and pretty much good for anything. but it does sound crappy on some amps. i remeber it sounding bad through the jcm800 and a couple of fenders. but it sounds great on my peavey, though. some amps just seem like it's too much for them and you get an overdistorted fizz. could be a thing with the equalizers.

ya.... The Mega is a good pedal.... I'm going to try it thru my buddies older Traynor sometime soon when we jam again.... he is useing an old 80's stock DS1 thru it and it does not have enough lows...

Re: DS-1 vs. DS-1: Initial Impressions

I don't have that much experience, but I would have to lean this way as well.

A stock DS1 works well when the amp you are using it thru already has great lows and mids... My Classic series Peavey's just have enough mids to make the pedal sound great... and i have the amps lows on full... Thru some amps that don't have a lot of mids or lows the stock DS1 is to raspy for most players...

I think most of us are trying to find distortion pedals that will turn a small amp into a bassy stack like sound....

Re: DS-1 vs. DS-1: Initial Impressions

Rich; Have you ever compared the Keeley version to the Spina-fied version?

Re: DS-1 vs. DS-1: Initial Impressions

Would you like to try one? PM me your address, and I'll send you mine. Temporarily. I want it back. ;)

Re: DS-1 vs. DS-1: Initial Impressions

Thanks for the offer Artie, but not now. As I told Krall last night, I gotta concentrate on playing and just let the gear ride for a while. This rig is "close enough" (really close) for the time being, and I have a ton of tunes to learn.

Re: DS-1 vs. DS-1: Initial Impressions

I sometimes use a DS-1. Mine is an older made in Japan model. I've tried Keeley's Seeing I modded DS-1 and also one of John Spina's modded DS-1's.

I prefered the stock MIJ DS-1 and the Spina modded DS-1 to the Keeley DS-1.

I prefer the stock MIJ DS-1 to either for the way I use it. John's DS-1 had a great overdriven tone with more balls and a thicker, deeper tone. I found that the modded DS-1's delivered more overdrive but what I like about the stock circuit is that I can leave it on all the time and clean up the tone just by turning the volume of the guitar down.

Much smoother and less abrubt to be able to go from clean to overdrive using the guitar's volume control. So I like the stock MIJ DS-1 best for the way I use it.

I noticed when I saw Satriani and Vai on the first G3 tour that they seemed to leave thier DS-1's on all of the time too and use them the same way I do. I dunno if those two still even use DS-1's though.

I know Gary Moore used a Marshall with a DS-1 on his earlier metal stuff

and his tone is absolutely amazing?

man i love that Moore stuff!!!! i saw a TV show years ago called School Of Rock... it was a VHS video series in the mid 80's.... Moore was showing his strat, Boss pedalboard and his Marshall stacks.... his sound was a DS1 as when he turned off the DS1 the Marshalls were really flat and clean sounding

Because of Moore is why i started using a Boss DS1 myself...

hes so good aswell! hes so very clean

yeah he goes from Clean > DS-1

so damn awesome!

im just listening to murder in the skies, victims of the future, shapes of things and stuff like that over and over, he's just insane.

Re: DS-1 vs. DS-1: Initial Impressions

I'm in the unbeliever camp. I too think it's way too buzzy, fizzy, thin...dunno. Really not my kind of sound.

BUT

It's easy to mod, it's a Boss pedal and it's cheap.
I must have spent an extra 5 pounds on components. And I got a pedal which sounded ENTIRELY different. NOTHING like a stock one.

What's the point, will you tell me... it's a good platform.

Just like the TS seems like a good OD circuit, the SD1 is cheap even though I don't like it stock. Easy to mod and cheap is a win win for me.

I had to sell my DS1 and one of the guy who works at the shop just bought it right away. But at some point I'll get another one and experiment a little more. The mods I had were a mix and match of different things + experimentations. I'd like to dwelve a little more into it and find what really is MY set. I don't know other people's mods so it'd have to be luck though :D

Glad you like yours Rich. Keeley is never affraid of showing people his mods and he gets all my respect for that. I'll see if I can find his DS1 somewhere.

Thanks again Lew for the nice plug about the modded DS1.....Alot of guys are spending about twice the amount of money from Keeley and can have a great pedal from a forum member I know! Whatever works is cool though, plus Robert is a great guy!
