Dsl 40c Buzzing/fuzzy Sound Blown Speaker?

Hi, i bought this amp a year ago and it was working fine until i started hearing a buzz when i play any note lower than my g string (standard tuning) i tried different guitars and many different cables without connecting the pedal board. I did the "tapping test" for the tubes and nothing was significant. I took the speaker out and pushed the cone inwards and i heard a very very faint rubbing sound. I started playing and touching part in my amp to see if something is rattling, the only thing that seemed to remove the buss was touching a certain part on the speaker cone. When i touch it from the back the buzz disappears when i touch it from the front the buzz increases.

Does this mean i have a blown speaker or it could be something else?

Thanks

Sounds like the speaker's voice coil has been damaged. There's a very fine tolerance for the gap between the coil and the magnet and if the coil gets out of shape as in not perfectly round it will rub against the magnet. So it's not blown but damaged enough to perform badly. Has the amp been dropped or roughly handled?

EDIT: To be sure run the amp into a known good speaker...if the problem goes away you know the problem is with the speaker. Luckily swapping out a speaker doesn't take an amp guru, so you can do it yourself.

If you don't have another speaker, you can also try tapping on the cone. If you hear a rattle rather than a solid thump, you probably found your problem.

Yep....

LOL, if you were running the stock Seventy/80 it's probably a blessing in disguise! The DSL is a great amp with a terrible speaker, get yourself a Vintage-30 or Creamback & you'll be sitting pretty!

I am sorry it seems like it may have become a need in your case instead of a desire or something to do down the road though....

I have grown very fond of the 70/80.

I agree with this, I like a creamback g75h with this amp. Thickens the tone, tightens the bass, and has a delightful midrange requency range. Each to his own.

I bought Nostalgic's 70/80's a year ago, so that's why I'm commenting. Have them paired with some old Randall Jaguars in an X pattern. They are finally getting broken in after about 9 months of weekends. They sound killer for metal. Nice crisp top. Respectable low end. The Jaguars add some mids where they might be lacking.

So after hearing many demos (and checking prices!) i ordered the Eminence Governor ...the question is: what causes this kind of damage to the speaker? i dont want to go through all this with a new speaker

If a power tube is bad when playing a loud you hit a chord or notes it will have a buzz/crackle effect or sound like a blown speaker or a hum which I had both at different times. That amp shouldnt blow the 70/80 at all. Will sound warmer with a new one anyways:)

But the sound i have is more audible on low volumes!

yeah thats pretty strange unless its a defected speaker but it supposed to handle like 75 watts or so

Re: Dsl 40c Buzzing/fuzzy Sound Blown Speaker?

just check that its not one of the leads inside the speaker frame rattling against the cone when it vibrates. Easy to gently bend them out of the way of that is the case.
If not then do the usual thing of eliminating tubes being the problem by replacing them one at a time.
If that doesn't do it, then it is probably time for a new speaker.

I took the speaker out and made sure nothing is rattling, the hum only disappears when i touch i specific part on the cone

Re: Dsl 40c Buzzing/fuzzy Sound Blown Speaker?

Are you positive it's the speaker and not a loose component in the amp, cabinet or amp chassis, or a tube that is rattling? Something could be buzzing/rattling due to certain frequencies (lower frequencies) and touching the cone could be changing the frequency and quieting the rattle. So make sure it's the actual speaker and not a tube or something else that's rattling. A tube that is rattling internally wont necessarily expose itself as "bad" or microphonic when tapping it with a pencil (or whatever). It can still rattle at certain frequencies. And that you hear the rattle/buzz more at lower volumes could mean that higher volume is just drowning out the noise so you don't hear it as distinctly.

If you depress the cone lightly and feel a rub, it could be the voice coil rubbing but you have to depress the cone equally, not just one side. Otherwise, it's not necessarily a valid "test". If you suspect that the noise is actually emanating from the speaker itself, you can tap on the cone and you should hear a solid "thud", like a drum. If you hear a rattle when you tap the cone, it's most likely the voice coil which would confirm your suspicions that it is the speaker itself. But I imagine it could still be the speaker even if you don't hear the rattle when tapping the front of the cone.

The moral of the story ... chasing down a noise source can be a challenge. :wrf:

Re: Dsl 40c Buzzing/fuzzy Sound Blown Speaker?

A rubbing voice coil should produce more of a rattle, than a hum. It sounds to me as though there may be a short somewhere in either the coil, the connections or the leads.

I tried touching the tubes while playing and nothing changed, also i took the speaker out of the combo so i guess nothing should be rattling or at least it should decrease in intensity but it didnt..i tried to depress the cone equally and i can hear a rub but it is very faint.

i dont know how describe the sound exactly but it sounds like a fuzz effect but in a bad way

Re: Dsl 40c Buzzing/fuzzy Sound Blown Speaker?

If you can hear it at all, or even feel it, then that's probably your problem.
