Dual NAD / NGD...

Picked-up a nearly mint Gibson LP Standard at my local shop over the weekend. Neck is the fatter variety. Normally I hate big necks (since I have small hands). But this thing has SO much tone an vibe I'm starting to re-think my small preference. I've always heard that bigger necks = bigger tone. I wasn't sure if I believed that. But after spending the last several days with this beast (it's HEAVY too), I'm starting to believe. My tone at band practice over the weekend was as good as it's ever been -- and that's without being plugged into one of my tube amps (I keep a Vox Tonelab LE into a Tech21 PowerEngine 60 2X12, loaded with V30s at the rehearsal space).

I also traded one of my tube amps for a Ceriatone 36W RP plexi clone. The previous owner put a Marshall logo on there. I'll likely be pulling that off, but replacing with large black knobs with the smaller Marshall style ones. Anyways... this this is an 18/36 watt, 4XEL84 powered amp and it's LOUD. I use my Carl Martin Plexitone to hit the front end and give me that classic cranked plexi vibe without going deaf. The amp sounds as good as any of the high-end boutique stuff I've been playing as of the past couple of years. I love the simplicity of it's hand-wired, point-to-point circuit.

Been playing through a bunch of classic rock ala ACDC, Def Leppard, The Darkness, etc with the LP into the plexi and just loving the big, fat, crunchy tone. Looking forward to gigging this rig in a few weeks at a large, outdoor gig.

Re: Dual NAD / NGD...

Nice score.

Most of my guitars have necks that are on the slim side, but my LP, like your's, is like a baseball bat. Lol. But it sounds so damn good. So I hear ya. The thicker necks do defiently have a little more "something" the slender ones don't.

Absolutely! My shop usually has half a dozen sweet burst Pauls down there. I've played 'em all and thought about buying, but it wasn't until this one that I was actually ready to buy. Some of the others had much more pleasant (for me) necks to play. But in the end, the older I get the more TONE RULES over everything else. I used to fight it when I had a guitar with a large neck. Hated them! But I'm more open now to learning to live-with and maybe even embrace the chunky necks. Chunky neck = chunky sound! Granted, this thing was gonna sound WAY bigger than the Music Man Steve Morse Y2D that I'll likely be trading for it. I picked-up that guitar to use for more country rock. But the band I now find myself in is classic and hard rock (even some metal, which I use my 7-string for). So the thin, snappy tone of the Morse just isn't cutting it. This leaden beast is perfect! (Though my bad back isn't going to appreciate the switch.)

Roy Kahn quote? RAD i wish he would return to glory.

Oh the gear, Yeah its cool too

Roy was the man. My kids and I still talk about him and lament his retirement nearly every day. Kamelot is our favorite prog/power metal band bar-none. My favorite era is from "Karma" through "The Black Halo".

Re: Dual NAD / NGD...

Good to see you back here posting.

The more I see Ceriatone clone amps, the more I want one.......for half what a vintage Marshall costs, and new. If I were you, I'd keep the Marshall logo on it. Tubedepot.com sells Marshall set screw knobs. If you order them from anyone, tell them to inspect each knob before sending it, since it's common for a knob or two to be missing the screw.

If you ever decide to sell that guitar, let me know before you get rid of it. I've always wanted a heavily flamed cherry SB LP.

Thanks Joe! It's good to be back!

Yeah, maybe I'll leave it on there. I really dig the sound of it. It's a great amp! And I'll definitely give you a heads-up if I end-up selling the LP.
