Duane Allman

This might be for someone who knows a lot about Duane's technique. Did he really use open E tuning? When I listen to Live at the Fillmore East, it sounds like he might have used standard tuning. The reason I say that is because I think I hear him playing regular style leads, then in another song you hear the famous slide stuff. OR did he just switch to another guitar for regular type leads, something in standard tuning?

Re: Duane Allman

I thought D*ckie Betts did all the 'regular style' (non-slide) lead stuff on that album.

(can you believe it bleeped out "D*ckie"?)

Re: Duane Allman

Duane Used a 61' Les Paul ( Really a SG.. But that's another story)
for most of his Slide work. He tuned to open E most of the time
But also used other tuning's like G & D? The only song I know he
did in STD. Tuning was DREAMS on the 1st album .Or I should say
as quoted by Mr. Forrester Richard Betts ( Yes folks that his real name)
With the tape rolling while recording that tune, Duane picked up his
slide that was sitting on his amp. And to the suprise of everyone
in the room pulled off that slide solo (Improv all the way) :newangel:

BTW POP QUIZ..... Duane was his middle name too,
Who knows what his real 1st name was? :smack:

Re: Duane Allman

I think KMC is about as right as we'll ever know. I'm assuming he learned how to jump positions on an open tuned guitar, to pull off the standard type licks. When I play in open G, I'll jump up a couple frets to pull off licks that include the high E.

Re: Duane Allman

well, i know his non-slide guitars were in standard tuning....

also, his real name was skydog? lol
im actually really interested in that answer.....

Re: Duane Allman

While there has been much debate, recently, over his guitars and pickups used at the Fillmore Concerts, the consensus of many ABB gear enthusiasts (including me) is that he played in Standard Tuning for most songs like Dreams, and then played in Open E for classics like Statesboro Blues. He didn't change guitars on stage during the Fillmore East run, rather he just tuned them down very quickly. It wasn't until late in 1971 that he started with the SG (which had previously been D-ckey's) and swapped guitars out on stage.

Open E Songs: Statesboro' Blues, Done Somebody Wrong, One Way Out, Trouble No More (Live), Drunken Hearted Boy, Stand Back, Don't Keep Me Wonderin', Little Martha

Standard: Dreams, Mountain Jam, Midnight Rider, Trouble No More (debut album version)

And, Duane Allman's first name is Howard. :)

Here is a pic of Duane's CherryBurst, which was used on the Fillmore East recording:

Very good Xerxes, Bonus points for knowing his nickname !!
He was born in Nashville, TN. (1946) as Howard Duane Allman

Re: Duane Allman

Just a funny blurb...I was in a club in Hollywood, and an acoustic blues trio was jamming onstage. Their bassist looked 100% identical to what Duane would look like today, had he lived. I was mesmorized. I sat in my chair with my eyes glued to him
and felt like I was witnessing the living Duane! He looked a bit haggard, like Duane might have now, had the same hair, same face, same body type. Unbelievable!

A few months later, I was in a Mexican Restaurant in W. Los Angeles, and saw him again! Keep in mind, I have a few Duane pictures on the wall in my house.
Again, I stared at this guy, then finally had to introduce myself. He had a Southern Accent. I almost did a backflip! I'm tellin you guys, Duane never died! He lives in
LA now, and plays bass! Now, I'm kicking myself because I should have asked him to take a picture standing next to me. I'm tellin you, this guy was a dead ringer for a mature Duane Allman!

Re: Duane Allman

Thanks for the replies, guys! I've been playing mostly with standard tuning, but there are some things where that's harder to do than with open E. Most of it works out, but there are some subtle nuances that open E works better with. Thanks again!

Another sidebar: not about Duane per se, but about ****ey Betts:

Me and my wife are sitting down at this little seafood place on the bay. Its called the "Outback Crabshack" that usually has some sort of "Jimmy Buffet" style guitar act going. Many folks come here by boat. So, we're sitting here supping brews and ****tails and having this huge seafood platter, and waiting to see who plays, when these kids come on stage. The lead guitarist looks about 14, bass player about 12, and drummer, maybe 10.

We think . . . ok, the owners kids get to play. About 10 minutes later, we're being blown away by some of the best honky blues I've ever heard! Turns out - this is ****ey Betts stomping ground, and this is his son, and band.

These "kids" were absolutely awesome! Made me feel like an idiot to call myself a guitar picker.

Haven't seen him since. I wonder what he sounds like now. ;)

Edit: Alright admins . . . this idiotic forum censor has to go. D**key Betts is not a dirty word!

Oh yea Duane Betts ( D I C K E Y ' S son) is awesome. I saw him sit in with Gov't Mule when Allen Woody was still alive. He was GREAT. I mean, I was blown away. Totally under the radar. He obviously learned a LOT from his dad, Warren and all the old recordings.

Duane Betts and Warren were trading off licks and Duane held his own. Big time. Awesome vibrato, great tone, and some tricky, clever little takes on cliches ala Warren and D I C K E Y.

I always wondered what he was gonna do with his music. The kid is obviously talented (and has good connections). :smoker:
