What are "Lay Down Mains", what do they do, and why are they imporant? Thanks in advance.

Re: Dumb Marshall Question

The mains tranny is the power tranny...there are 2 styles an upright and a lay down, it's just the way they physically attached to the chassis.

As for an advantage to each I know of none however a large number of old and a number of historically amazing sounding Marshalls (some of Jimi's the EVH amp, etc) had lay down mains trannys...I have a storng feeling thats the big deal surrounding them.

Re: Dumb Marshall Question

Thanks Christian. Seems like it may be one of those "Myths" that's floating around. Probably one of many component factors that came together in a few special amps that shaped the Marshall sound. From what you're saying, simply adding a lay down transformer to a Marshall that didn't have one would not have a significant effect on tone (assuming the trannies were from the same period and of the same type)...is that right?

Re: Dumb Marshall Question

The JTM45's and early JTM45/100's as well as many Fender amps have lay down Power Transformers. IMO (Granted the voltages are correct) The PT has Lil' to no affect on overall tone.
