I think most of those 12AX , U, etc are interchangeable. I'm sure he's fine with the 12AX7A. He should check the Ruby Tube website or Groove Tubes to get a better description.

I checked the Groove tube website and the have 12AX7C, M, & R, which means one's form China, the next is a Mullard reissue, & the last is from Russia. So the Ruby Tube "A" stands for something like that I assume. It's just a 12AX7.

the "A" at the end denotes a low noise variety, technically. But it's true to say that alot of resellers use apendix to denote country of origin etc.

That said, don't be confused, the earlier Letter (X vs U vs T) in "12AX7" denotes the gain/ruggedness of the valve type... and are not always interchangeable.
