Dumble Amp - oh my god

Re: Dumble Amp - oh my god

Skrydstrup Amps. Two Rock....

I've seen both Larry Carlton and Robben Ford with these and they both sound amazing. They did sound amazing before they used Dumbles too, but they now sound a tidbit more amazing.

The fundemental "amazing" is in their hands and minds.

Regarding the price: my amp is worth 1000-1500$. There are many people out there who make 30 times the money I do, so why shouldn't they buy one.

Re: Dumble Amp - oh my god

I think everyone in this thread is correct. That price is a result of everything from the mythical/eccentric builder, the supreme tone, the hype, the collectibility, the famous players who are among the few owners, the rarity of that particular amp in that condition.

That amp has become almost mythical, and there's several amp companies that build great clones...Two Rock, Fuchs, Mystic etc. I think Mystic actually makes a straightup copy.

Re: Dumble Amp - oh my god

yeah, you can get a clone for a standard 'boutique' price. Leave the actual Dumbles to the blues laywers and rockstars.

No such thing as a "straightup copy", really. Each amp that Dumble builds is voiced specifically for the player who ordered it. As a result, there's a pretty significant variation in the tone even between amps of the same "model".

Re: Dumble Amp - oh my god

To be honest, I don't like the OD tone on my Two Rock all that much better than having my Rumble Mod in front of my Rivera but the rig's feel is like the difference between a Squier Strat hangin' on the wall at Guitar Denter and a PRS that just got back from a pro setup. The Two Rock feels like part of the guitar while I feel more like I'm playing through the Rumble Mod/Rivera setup.
Hehe I hear you:)
And yeah the Dumbles are custom made.
They take forever in assembly...:duh:

That's a pretty ignorant statment on a variety of levels.

First, you have to audition to get Dumble to agree to build one for you. It's primarily to give him an idea of how to voice the amp but I'm sure it also helps keep out the riff-raff. "Blues lawyers" (a term typically used by jealous players to disparage that which they cannot afford) can't get one built for them unless they have pro-level chops.

Secondly, you seem to grossly underestimate just how much better an amp can get. The first Two Rock I played (an Onyx, IIRC) left me underwhelmed when I played it. When I ran across my Emerald sitting in the used gear section of a Guitarget, I expected more of the same but after 20 minutes of playing that amp (as a bunch of shredders were warming up for Guitarmageddon), I had to have it. If you haven't experienced that it's nothing to be embarassed about but if you haven't actually played many high-end amps (whether though anti-snobbery or lack of opportunity), you aren't in a good position to authoritatively dis them.

Re: Dumble Amp - oh my god

Dumbles aren't even the ridiculously priced amps, Trainwrecks are. ;) Dumbles can be had from 10-15 grand, something like a mint Trainwreck Express is in the 25-30 grand range.

There are plenty of amp companies that try to do the "Dumble" thing or a slight variation of it, all of which were mentioned earlier in this thread: Fuchs ODS, Mystique Amplifiers Mystic Blues, Skrydstrup OD50, and the Two Rock Custom Reverb will get you in the ballpark (some options are obviously much more expensive than others).

Re: Dumble Amp - oh my god

This is a joke. Some of the best Blues tones ever, for ex. Clapton's BBreakers, B.B. King Live At Regal, Peter Green (FM)Live At The Shrine, Freddy King, and some others weren't achieved using a Dumbo, errr uh, Dumble;)

Many, myself included, will argue that SRV had better tone before the Dumble.

Whatever, there's a sucker born every minute.

.

I have to agree with Hot Grits on this- I thought 'blues lawyers' was a term describing white, wealthy, non-pro, middle age men who need some connection with their youth by collecting expensive vintage and new-but-made-to-look-and-sound vintage gear and playing the minor pentatonic scale no matter what chord progression it is over. They tend to pour over Vintage Guitar magazine and put more of the focus on 'bragging rights' than actually playing. They usually own a few sportscars or a Harley too.

In any case, Im a pro, and can't afford a Dumble...most pros can't, but then again, most pros can't afford huge houses, nice cars, health insurance, etc...I have never bought a custom amp, but I have bought custom guitars...As a pro, if I were going to go the custom route, I'd rather give my money to an amp builder who will charge a fair price for the time and effort involved.

WHAT?! i thought i finally found the proverbial chops in a box

Re: Dumble Amp - oh my god

I remember one time running across a brand named "Dunble"... someone posted it on here a year or so ago?

Re: Dumble Amp - oh my god

haha, the funniest part about that is that it's dusty. who sells an item for $10,000 and won't even bother wiping it off for a couple pictures?

Re: Dumble Amp - oh my god

wait, i have to audition for him in order for them to build an amp for me? i'am not worthy:notworthy

Re: Dumble Amp - oh my god

Mythical or not, at that price that thing better make me sound like Eddie Van Halen and come with a couple groupies. :D

Re: Dumble Amp - oh my god

For 30 grand I'd rather invest in technology that plugs right into my brain to make the guitar notes and tones transmit out of my brain exactly as I envision them via a USB port or something like that. :laugh2:

Re: Dumble Amp - oh my god

I'm not defending the price, but I ask again- have you ever played through one? The one that I was lucky enough to play through was heavenly.

Re: Dumble Amp - oh my god

Oh man, I'm bummed! :gurmpy:

The auction has ended, and it merely says $10,000.

For those of you who didn't catch the auction, the bidding was up to $29,000.00 (yes, twenty nine THOUSAND dollars).

I was SO looking forward to seeing how much it would grab....

Damn!

:smack:

It's a relic!:laugh2:

I've heard they're great, but I always think of the folks who I believe have great tone and they don't play a dumble.

It's the vintage Ferrari 250 of amps. Those who want one will get one and pay for it. Thankfully, though, most buyers will most likely take very good care of it-maybe that's not such a bad thing.
